Lucid Art encourages nonrepresentational ways of exploration through mixed media, conceptual, eco art, and interdisciplinary approaches. Artists will focus on learning about the practice of Lucid Art with an emphasis on the integration of art, process, and inner awareness. By shifting artistic paradigms, a deeper base is nurtured for understanding individual creative growth and development as well as the role of the artist in society.

The residency is a 3-week stay for artists in a serene, retreat-like surrounding to delve into a contemplative state with their studio work. Solitary explorations in a remote place enable artists to unplug from their daily routines and find a deeper connection with nature.

The residency will provide a cottage to live in, located in the center of the Foundation campus. It has one bedroom, a living room, a bathroom, and a full kitchen. The cottage has a private deck that overlooks the Inverness ridge of the Bishop Pine Preserve. It has electric heat. There is Wi-Fi in the cottage, but there is no computer or TV. There is a washer and dryer and all linens are provided. A telephone can be used for local calls only. Cell phones will most likely work here, but with a reduced range of coverage.

The residency artist will use a studio called the “Ark.” The studio was built in 1960 and was originally used by painter Gordon Onslow Ford, then by painter John Anderson (1962-1964), and finally by mixed media artist and scholar Fariba Bogzaran (1995-2011). The studio is a large workspace with a restroom, work sink, expansive wood walls, high ceilings, upper loft, glass sliding door to a private deck, and plenty of natural light coming in through skylights. There are modular bases with wooden tops available for arranging various worktable configurations. There is a fireplace as well as two electric heaters. There is no Wi-Fi in the studio.

Meals are not provided during the residency. Artists will need their own transportation to nearby towns to buy food and supplies as needed.

During the residency, artists will meet with a faculty member (artists and educators) who will discuss and give feedback on the work created.

During the first week, artists will be given a tour of Gordon Onslow Ford’s studio and home, shedding light on the historical and environmental context seeding the residency program and campus.
