Bridgerland Technical College in partnership with the Utah Division of Facilities Construction and Management and the Utah Arts & Museums’ Public Art Program requests qualifications from artists and/or artist teams interested in creating site specific artwork(s) for the new Bridgerland Technical College Health Sciences Building in Logan, Utah.

BRIDGERLAND TECHNICAL COLLEGE

Established in 1971, Bridgerland Technical College was founded with a mission to deliver competency-based, employer-guided career and hands-on technical education to both secondary and post-secondary students through traditional and technology-enhanced methodologies. This hands-on technical education provides occupational education, skills training, and workforce development to support the educational and economic development of the Bear River Region.

Bridgerland’s commitment to the community has created a technical college with exceptional training. They are equipped to move forward as the leader in creating pathways for students to transition certificates into higher education degrees. Their dedication to excellence has resulted in a tradition of success in the fields of nursing, dental assisting, medical assisting, pharmacy technician, and a host of other health sciences careers. This is evidenced by a near 100 percent NCLEX nursing pass rate for the last 20 plus years.

HEALTH SCIENCES BUILDING

The Bridgerland Technical College Health Sciences Building will contain approximately 75,000 square feet of space for programs that train registered nurses (in collaboration with WSU), practical nurses, medical assistants, pharmacy technicians, medical office personnel, nursing assistants, dental assistants, and phlebotomists.

This modern, cornerstone building is located at a high-traffic intersection, designed with easy wayfinding and a comfortable and welcoming environment. It will contain high-tech, purpose-built classrooms, labs, and support spaces, carefully organized and located with respect to key adjacencies. The building’s access to inspiring views and invigorating natural delight create a spirit of wellbeing, mindfulness, and health, creating a gathering space for various functions and sizes of groups.

LOGAN, UTAH

The land now known as Utah was first inhabited by the ancient Pueblo people, sometimes referred to as the Anasazi. Later, the Ute Tribe, which the state is named for, settled in the area centered around the Provo Valley. The state has eight federally recognized Native Nations, the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Indians, Navajo Nation, Ute Indian Tribe, Northwestern Band of Shoshone, Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, San Juan Southern Paiute, Skull Valley Band of Goshute, and White Mesa Band of the Ute Mountain Ute. The city of Logan resides on the ancestral and contemporary lands of the Shoshone Nation.

Logan is nestled at the foot of the nearly 10,000-foot high Bear River Mountain Range. Residents consider Logan Canyon a 40-mile community park which leads to 18-mile long Bear Lake, called the Rocky Mountain Caribbean for its azure blue waters. Logan boasts of outstanding fishing, biking, hiking, skiing, camping, and golfing. The city boasts a strong agricultural base - Cache County is Utah's leading agricultural producer. However, the cultural offerings are excellent with a resident opera company, repertory theatre, several dance companies, and accomplished artists.

The Bridgerland Main Campus is located between the Bear River Mountain Range and the Wellsville Mountain Range, and is a short distance from the Bear River wetlands. While this area is now a busy mix of industrial/tech uses, and ever-growing light commercial and low-to-medium density residential neighborhoods, the area is historically agricultural in character.

COMMITTEE STATEMENT

Bridgerland Technical College views this new building as a model facility for modern healthcare education, featuring a full display of the hands-on healthcare educational labs and classrooms, maximum windows on both the south and the north facades allowing sunlight to penetrate through the whole building, and key framed views of the mountain ranges beyond. The interior design of the building is warm, inspiring, comfortable, sustainable, and enhances wellness and learning. Understanding that a key goal is to teach students the importance of their role in “healing”, careful use of texture, color, natural and artificial light, healthcare branding, organic materials, and connections to nature have been carefully considered and integrated.

The Bridgerland Health Sciences Building Selection Committee invites artists to consider the role of therapeutic milieu while interpreting the architecture of this new building. The artwork should incorporate the natural light carefully employed throughout the building, moving away from a sterile medical environment to a healing space for students. With this in mind, the Committee recommends the following areas as potential sites for an artist’s integration:

1. The airspace of the Main Lobby*
2. The exterior Southwest or Southeast Plaza

*This is the preferred location of the selection committee

BUDGET

$166,000 is available for all related expenses of this Public Art commission including (but not limited to) artist fees, fabrication, engineering, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, documentation, etc.

ELIGIBILITY

Resident US citizen or legal resident artists/artist teams. Utah artists are strongly encouraged to apply. Art Selection Committee members, staff and Board of Utah Arts & Museums, and Method Studio Architects are not eligible to apply for this commission.

Interested artists may submit applications online via CallForEntry.
The application process will prompt you for all necessary documents and information. This includes up to 10 images and/or up to 2 movie files of previous work, a CV or resume, and a Letter of Interest explaining your interest in the project and how your work might relate to the project.

SELECTION PROCESS AND SCHEDULE

The Selection Committee will review all properly submitted qualifications from which a short list of semi-finalists will be selected. Semi-finalists will be asked present a full proposal to the committee on November 30, 2022 to include concept, budget, and timeline. All semi-finalists will be awarded an honorarium to help defray the costs of the development of the proposal. The honorarium will be applied toward the commission amount for the artist(s) awarded the commission(s.) Utah Arts & Museums will not be responsible for applications delayed or lost. The Bridgerland Health Sciences Art Selection Committee reserves the right to withhold the award of a commission or re-release the call for entries.
