About the Call

Building on a 16-year history of successful art exhibitions and projects across the Northwest, PUNCH Projects presents Barnstorm - a series of pop-up exhibitions activating rural spaces in unexpected ways with art, music and creative installations. The third event in the series transforms what was once the Thorp firehouse into an exhibition highlighting works in all media in the form of projections and digital prints gathered from an international call to artists. Beyond the exhibition, this year’s call-to-artists also provides an opportunity to be considered for an artist residency in central Washington with living accommodations, access to studio facilities and an honorarium. Artists may apply to one or both of these opportunities through this call.

Barnstorm Exhibition

The exhibition will consist of printed and framed images, video monitors and projections. Instead of original pieces of art, selected artists will be given instructions to provide a high-resolution digital image file or video file of the chosen work(s). Images will then be printed and framed 12”x12” by PUNCH Projects for exhibition. Video works will be displayed via monitors and projections (supplied by PUNCH) directly onto the interior and exterior walls of the building. PUNCH Projects will pay the cost of shipping unsold prints to the artists after the exhibition closes.

There is no theme to the call; however, we encourage submissions that consider how a work might speak to the dialogue between urban and rural sensibilities, as well as images and videos that might operate in a non-traditional exhibition space of this sort. All forms of images will be considered: photo-based works, photos of 2-d artwork, photos of installation, new media, sculpture, or other 3-d work, and photo stills from video works. Video clips, full-length video works and audio works are also welcome and encouraged.

PUNCH Visiting Artist Program

In addition to applying for the exhibition, artists may choose to be considered for a residency award of 1-2 weeks in July or August. Housing will be provided by PUNCH in the upstairs apartment of our exhibition and event space in Thorp, WA. Our partner organization, Gallery One Visual Arts Center in neighboring Ellensburg will provide studio space with access to their ceramics facilities if desired. With support from the Robert B. McMillen Foundation and Gallery One, $400 weekly stipend will be provided and a partial travel stipend will be available for artists traveling from outside of Washington State. If selected as a possible resident, we will email you with available dates in July and August and you can make a final decision at that time.

Submission Guidelines

Artists may choose to apply to only the exhibition, or the exhibition and residency.

Works and artists will be selected by the PUNCH Projects staff and Board of Directors (Renee Adams, Howard Barlow, Justin Beckman, Will Bow and Justin Gibbens). No original works will need to be shipped for this exhibition. Instead, accepted artists will be given instructions to provide a high-resolution digital image file or video file of the chosen work(s).

All selected works will be cropped to a square format for the print exhibition. We encourage the artists to do this prior to submitting. However, you may also submit uncropped images and PUNCH will make adjustments to the work prior to printing.

Prints included in the exhibition will be considered a “unique and limited edition” and more than one may be purchased by exhibition visitors. An artist may also choose to have their work “not for sale” and be for display only.

PUNCH will cover the cost to print and frame the exhibition works and will pay 50% of any sales to the artist. Works in the exhibition will all be priced the same at $200 each. Every participating artist will receive either a print of their work or $100.

Video and audio works may be of any proportion or length and will be for exhibition only, not for sale.

There is no theme to the call; however, we encourage submissions that consider how a work might speak to the dialogue between urban and rural sensibilities, as well as images and videos that might operate in a non-traditional exhibition space of this sort.
