About Gallery 2727, an Artist Run Co-Op

Gallery 2727 is a new co-operative art gallery being created in South Berkeley at 2727 California Street. Our mission is to provide opportunities for emerging visual artists in the Bay Area to display and sell their work. Gallery 2727 will support a vibrant community of artists of diverse styles, mediums, life experiences, and perspectives. Our mission is to provide members a space to exhibit and sell their work, and provide inexpensive or free access to professional resources. Gallery 2727 is committed to making mentorship and professional development in artistic and business dimensions available to members. We anticipate the gallery being open every other month, with 6 shows and openings per year (alternating and coordinated with performance, assembly and community uses of the space).

Benefits of Membership

A bright, open gallery space for artists to exhibit their work and connect to art buyers.

Promotion of art openings and events through the Gallery’s extensive contact list and local media.

Additional access to potential buyers through our website.

Generous commission of 70% of sales to the artist.

A community of local artists who mentor and support each other and their creative activities.

People of diverse backgrounds, working in a wide range of artistic mediums and styles.

Availability of free mentorship opportunities from experienced artists to those developing their craft.

Artist development through workshops, demonstrations and talks, in addition to openings.

Business and professional skills development - learning about sales and operations of a gallery.

Networking opportunities with members, curators, gallerists, and the public.

Responsibilities of Membership

As a co-op, all members share in the responsibility of staffing the gallery for a designated number of hours per month. Membership dues are $75 for the first year and for yearly renewal (the fee may be waived based on need). Members also serve on a committee of their choice, such as exhibits, selection of new members, marketing, etc. Members are expected to attend opening receptions as well as occasional meetings, which may be remote. When exhibiting, members will deliver work ready for installation and will hang and remove their own artwork and contribute as necessary. Members are encouraged to maintain insurance coverage for their work.

About the 2727 California Street Performance Space, Co-op Gallery and Live-Work Facility

Gallery 2727 is part of a non-profit public charity (Hellerstein Foundation, a [501(c)3]) that oversees 2727 California Street. This is a performance and community assembly space, live-work facility and general creative hub that is now adding a co-op gallery. The building contains art studios, a 3-4 bedroom living space, outdoor work and gathering space, and a beautiful theater and performance space with a sprung-dance floor, balcony and high-quality movie and sound systems. The Gallery will feature 2-story high display walls, movable walls with lights, an overhead controllable lighting grid and striking natural light. Our community has grown since inception in 2017 and comprises diverse performers, poets, musicians, film-makers and writers in addition to visual artists. The Gallery will be integrated and coordinated with the multi-use performance and assembly space.
