There is a Capitol Christmas Tree? YES!

Each year since 1970, a Christmas Tree has been selected from one of the nation's 153 national forests and presented to the United States, received by the Speaker of the House. For the first time in twelve years, the tree will be a gift from the state of Colorado. This magnificent natural monument will be placed prominently on the Capitol lawn and beautifully decorated with ornaments made by school children from across Colorado. In honor of this national event, the White River National Forest, working with its non-profit partner, Choose-Outdoors, will host a juried art exhibition to select an official artwork representing the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree.

Art Competition Objective

To produce a captivating and stellar collection of artworks that will accompany the Capitol Christmas Tree to Washington D.C. with one work selected as the official image of the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree.

Art Competition Theme: Into the Woods

Into the Woods is a national competition but encourages a strong showing from Colorado artists. Into the Woods artists are invited to submit work inspired by, influenced by and “representational” of our National Forests. Themes can include (but are not limited to): natural scenic beauty and/or depictions of the national Christmas tree; outdoor recreation; the relationship between people and the environment; current forestry issues (i.e. fires; pine beetle impact; conservation); the contradictory themes of beauty amidst destruction and power versus fragility.
