Texas Photographic Society is proud to present #NewVisions2023, our annual online, open-themed collegiate student photo competition. The exhibition will be juried by V. Elizabeth Turk, Professor of Photography at Savannah College of Art & Design and a photographer with work in the collections of the High Museum of Art, the Polaroid USA Collection, and others. For more details, see the Juror's Statement and Bio below.

Submissions from college undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education students of all skill levels are encouraged. Students may submit up to 12 images and each image will be judged independently. CASH PRIZES and a FUJIFILM Camera (X-T30 II body with XF18-55mm lens kit) will be awarded.  See details below.

JUROR'S STATEMENT

Photography has been magical since its inception in the early 1800s, and ever since, humans have been drawn to both the technology and art of capturing an image. As students of photography, we find inspiration in its history, technical advances, methods, and processes, and we also learn from critical discussion of the ideas sparked by images. As humans on earth at this particular time, we are influenced by the abundance of photography in our lives: in news, advertising, science, social media, family history, on the walls of thousands of art museums and galleries.

Interesting work is work that shows intent, whether the result is exactly as planned or the “happy accident.” The strongest images show a risk taken, a decision or choice made, whether from a highly orchestrated studio shoot, an “out of the corner of your eye” image with a smart phone, a stroll through your neighborhood or an experiment in the darkroom.

All media and approaches are welcome for submission to this exhibition: digital, film, photograms, chemigrams, lumen prints, antiquarian processes (cyanotype, Van Dyke, palladium, collodion). All genres are welcome too: documentary, fashion, street, landscape, portrait, self-portrait, representational or abstract. Or mix it up!

Honor your own experience and influences when you create an image for submission. I encourage you to submit images that reflect your vision, your exploration of the world, your curiosity and passion for photography.

- V. Elizabeth Turk
