The Artists Gallery (TAG) has created The Shelley Lazarus Award for Excellence in Watercolor to honor Shelley Lazarus, a current and Founding Member of TAG Gallery since 1993. She is a Los Angeles based watercolor artist and teacher. Her work is in numerous public, corporate and private collections in the U.S. and abroad including the library at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Shelley’s work was seen at in the International Art Competition for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She is a member of the Watercolor Honor Society and a signature member of the Oklahoma National Watercolor Society. 

Juror - Ted Nuttall

A graduate of Colorado Institute of Art, Ted Nuttall is a figurative artist whose painting expression was born out of his observation of people. Mr. Nuttall is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, San Diego Watercolor Society and enjoys Master Signature Status with both the Transparent Watercolor Society of America and Watercolor West.  Nuttall's paintings continue to win awards in juried exhibitions throughout the country. And his work has been featured in numerous national and international art publications. Ted was a featured artist in both the 2014 Russian publication Masters of Watercolor and in the 2013 French publication Pratique Des Arts. He was the featured cover artist for the February 2014 issue of Watercolor Artist magazine. His work has been published in North Light Books, Splash 8 and Splash 10, and his painting Whispering Smith appeared on the cover of Splash 12. More recently, the February 2020 issue of Watercolor Artist includes a feature article written by Mr. Nuttall displaying his work and discussing some of his working process.

The Shelley Lazarus Award for Excellence in Watercolors is open to artists over 18 years old residing in the United States.

AWARDS

First Place - $500. Second Place - $250. Third Place - $100.

SUBMISSION CRITERIA AND CONTENT

Entries must be original and of the artist’s own execution. Do not submit works which violate copyright laws. Artwork created and completed under the direct supervision of an instructor is not eligible. Once artwork is submitted, it may not be substituted or withdrawn by the artist. All juried artwork must remain at TAG Gallery until the end of the exhibit. Work must have been created within the last three years. All hanging artwork must have wire and hanging hardware suitable for the size and weight of the piece(s). All hanging artwork MUST be prepared to hang, and be sure to test that your artwork hangs flush to the wall, and if your piece is complex, provide instructions/photos on exactly how you want it to be presented. We reserve the right not to hang artwork prepared in a way that risks being damaged during installation (too much weight, or fragility, or not prepared to hang).

ARTWORK FORMAT, PRESENTATION & REQUIREMENTS 

Artwork submissions are limited to six (6) original artworks per artist as JPGs. Artwork must be less than 40 inches wide including frame.

FORMAT FOR DIGITAL IMAGES (JPGS)

All entries must be submitted as a high resolution (1-3 MB) digital JPEG. Images should be cropped to remove background and/or frame. Image quality is critical: Poor photography and presentation may affect acceptance by the juror. The digital image (JPG) must represent the submitted art. 

ENTRIES & FEES 

One entry is $35. Artist may add up to 5 additional entries at $5 each. Payment is made through CaFÉ via credit card. Fees are non-refundable. There is no guarantee of acceptance into the exhibit.

SALES

All artwork MUST be for sale. All sales will be handled by TAG Gallery; artists will be notified when a sale is made. TAG Gallery will receive 35% commission for artwork in this exhibition. If you are interested in TAG membership, visit https://www.taggallery.net/membership  

SHIPPING

Invited artists will receive an email with shipping and delivery information. Artists who ship painting(s) must provide return, prepaid shipping labels along with their shipped painting(s).

RECEPTION

The Shelley Lazarus Award for Excellence in Watercolor in-person Reception is Saturday, March 25th, 2023, 5-9pm at TAG Gallery, 5458 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90036. Ample street parking on Wilshire Boulevard and side street parking is available. We invite the participating artists to introduce themselves and discuss their art during the reception.  

PROMOTION OF THE EXHIBIT

Promotion will be handled by TAG Gallery. We provide graphics and strongly encourage artists to promote the exhibit on social media as well.
