St. John’s Health will create and maintain an art collection that promotes healing, builds community, and exemplifies our commitment to excellence. Through an emerging and growing field of research, art in healthcare settings is recognized as a powerful tool used to create a healing environment by lowering stress and anxiety of patients, families, and staff. Art helps rejuvenate, restore and heal the human spirit; it transforms the visitor experience, builds community among patients and staff, and demonstrates a commitment to excellence.

Overview History

For nearly 100 years, St. John’s Health (SJH) has been a symbol of quality, compassion, and excellence. In 1916 when we were founded and through every expansion, name change, technological improvement, and strategic affiliation we have undertaken since, St. John’s has functioned as the anchor of the community. 

In the 1930s, a retiring Dr. Huff—the area’s first physician—commented that many people could not think of living in “so isolated a community were it not for the fact that they feel they will be carefully cared for by the hospital.” The same sentiment is true today. Simply put: St. John’s Health is a community hospital. 

Project Description

St. John’s Health will display artworks on loan that promote healing and exemplify our commitment to excellence. 

Selection Process

St. John’s Health Foundation works with JH Public Art and a volunteer Art Committee to ensure that the highest aesthetic standards are expressed in the St. John’s Health facilities’ art collection. The Foundation’s Art Committee makes recommendations that are reviewed by the Foundation Board and internal committees.
 

Selection Criteria

• Artistic merit, originality and creativity
• Meets Evidence Based Criteria describe herein
• Creates a welcoming first impression that evokes a sense of calm, healing, wellness and excellence in service.

Art for Healthcare Settings

St. John’s has adopted “Evidence Based Art Selection” criteria to serve as general guidelines:

• Nature imagery that depicts healthy, fresh plants and flowers.
• Landscapes with visual depth, open foreground.
• Color palettes that are calming, natural, verdant colors.
• Conceptual designs that reference ethereal movements of wind, water and air.
• Wildlife that depicts creatures in good health, standing strong, or in anthropomorphized social groups.
• Figurative art depicting smiling faces and leisurely interactions.

Examples:

• Waterscapes (Calm or Non-turbulent Water),
• Landscapes (with visual depth or open foreground, trees with broad canopy, Savannah Landscapes, verdant Vegetation, or positive cultural artifacts),
• Flowers (familiar, healthy and fresh, in natural settings with open foreground), and
• Figurative Art (depicting emotionally positive faces, diverse and leisurely in nature).
• Wildlife that depicts healthy animals engaged in positive activities.
• Color Palettes that are calming, natural colors.

• Invites sensory stimulation
• Inspires social interaction and builds community
• Connects to place
• Relieves stress (Calming, Positive)
• Creates a source of Pride for staff and residents, boost employee morale

• Appropriate for diverse physical and cognitive abilities.

Media/Style/Size

St. John’s Health Foundation seeks original paintings, limited edition prints and photographs for display for a one-year period of time.

All artworks must be framed using durable, permanent media that is safe, can be cleaned, and requires little to no maintenance. Plexiglass, not glass, should be used in all art displayed in St. John’s Health.
