About the Exhibition

“The Gap Between Art and Life,” is an inaugural competitive, southeastern regional exhibition organized by the Webber Gallery of the College of Central Florida. Open to all forms of installation art, the exhibition will present a display of multiple installation works by selected artist. “The Gap Between Art and Life,” will be on view from Aug. 7 to Sept. 7, 2023. The minimal entrance fee covers the online submission process. The jury panel for this exhibition will be composed of the president of Artistic Eye Fine Art Services, Leslie Hammond, and current Appleton assistant director, Victoria Billig, who will be determining what artworks are selected for display in this show, in consultation with the Webber Gallery staff and College of Central Florida Art Faculty.  
 

About the Jurors

Dr. Leslie Hammond, president of Artistic Eye Fine Art Services, is a fine arts consultant and Accredited Senior Appraiser of Fine Arts as well as an art historian, archaeologists and museum professional. Dr. Hammond holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art History from The Ohio State University, a Masters in Classical Archaeology from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri in Art History and Archaeology, and a minor in Museum Studies. 
Leslie has an excess of two decades experience in public and private museums researching, publishing and caring for collections, curating exhibitions, presenting lectures and programs as well as acting as a juror and/or judge of art fairs, shows, exhibitions and special projects. She has also taught diverse courses in the arts and humanities and field experiences include survey and excavation work as well as architectural drafting and artifact illustration posts in Greece, Cyprus and Egypt.

Victoria Billig is Assistant Director of Museum Operations at the Appleton Museum of Art. She earned an MS in Interdisciplinary Arts from Nova Southeastern University, and a Graduate Certificate in Museum Students and BA in Art History from the University of South Florida. Prior to joining the Appleton Museum of Art, she held positions at the Pelham Art Center in Pelham, NY, the NSU Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, and the USF Contemporary Art Museum in Tampa. She sits on the board of the Magnolia Art Xchange, an incubator for emerging artists, and is a member of Marion County’s Tourist Development Council. Victoria has juried art festivals and exhibitions, and served as a grant panelist, for organizations across the United States.

 

Submission Requirements

Entry fee: $20 per entry, up to five works per entry.

Additional Information: Along with your artists statement, you will also be prompted to provide written information on how the artwork is installed, what audio volume and/or brightness of display is put out by the installation as well as if this is adjustable, and with what hardware the installation is installed. Works cannot contain toxic, flammable or otherwise inherently dangerous material, endanger gallery visitors in any way, and must include all the necessary equipment, hardware or other components required for install. All cords must be properly grounded with GFCI plugs. We also ask that you upload a PDF file containing any visual aids necessary for visualizing how the artwork is installed. Accepted Artists will also need to provide Artist Biography.

File dimensions: No smaller than 1200 pixels on the longer side. File resolution 72/ppi/dpi.

File size: 5 MB maximum

File Amount: Minimum of one image and maximum of four detail/alternate view images per entry. When submitting multiple images of the same artwork, please title: “Installation Title”A, “Installation Title”B, Installation Title” C, and so on.

• High Resolution Jpegs of accepted artwork will be required (image needs to have minimum of 300 DPI and must be Jpeg).

Eligibility

Southeast American artists residing in the U.S. states of AL, AR, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, SC, or TN. 18 years and older are eligible to enter. Work must have been completed within the last four years. Original works in any media that requires installation into a gallery space are eligible. 

 

Agreement

Filing of the entry form constitutes an agreement on the part of the entrant to all conditions set forth in the prospectus, including permission to use images of the exhibited work in print or on-line media for promotional, educational or archival purposes, and for the creation of a brochure of the exhibit.

• Accepted artwork may ultimately be refused at the Webber Gallery’s discretion if unable to install properly, if it is deemed unfit for the gallery space available, or if art varies greatly from the submission image. 

 

Sales

A 10% commission will be charged on all sales. Artists must assume the expense and responsibility of shipping any artwork if necessary. Artwork pricing specified at the time of submission cannot be changed later. Please verify that the price specified upon submission accounts for any expenses occurred as part of gallery commission. Artists will be mailed a check for sold work following the close of the exhibition.

  

Shipping and Installation

Artwork that is shipped must be sent through UPS or FedEx and must include a return shipping label (all shipping expenses will be reimbursed using stipend upon submission of photos of shipping cost receipts). If being shipped, artwork must arrive at the Webber Gallery by July 20, 2023. Shipped work must be sent with detailed and clear instructions for installation by the Webber Gallery staff. Works cannot contain toxic, flammable or otherwise inherently dangerous material, endanger gallery visitors in any way, and must include all the necessary equipment, hardware or other components required for install. All cords must be properly grounded with GFCI plugs. The Webber Gallery is not responsible for any artwork damaged in transit to and from the exhibition. Any damages that occur during shipping must be covered by the artist. Please, no Styrofoam peanuts unless contained inside plastic bags. Ship your work in reusable packaging to: Webber Gallery – The Gap Between, College of Central Florida, 3001 S.W. College Road, Ocala, FL 34474-4415. For artists coming in person to install their artwork in the Webber Gallery space, they may come at any point from July 26-August 2, 2023. A stipend will be provided to all accepted artists for travel to the Webber Gallery for in-person install as well as for artwork shipment to the Webber Gallery if artwork is shipped. For in-person install, please plan to be at the Webber Gallery with enough time to complete the artwork install in the gallery space. Again, all artworks cannot contain toxic, flammable or otherwise inherently dangerous material, endanger gallery visitors in any way, and artists must provide all the necessary equipment, hardware or other components required for install. All cords must be properly grounded with GFCI plugs.

 

Webber Gallery Display

The Webber Gallery is comprised of 7 sections of carpeted gallery walls, and 4 sections of drywall on movable gallery walls, and one built in 124” projector screen with a projector compatible with laptop plug in via VGA Cable, VHS, or DVD (refer to photographs in PDF provided). All dimensions for gallery walls and movable walls are provided in the PDF attached to this call. Artworks can be attached/hung on the carpeted gallery walls using nails, screws, or Velcro. Artworks can be attached/hung from the movable gallery walls using nails, screws, or glue and adhesive. Installations have been attached to the ceiling using command hooks, however, the gallery ceiling is a drop tile ceiling that can only support a minimal amount of weight. Materials may not mar, scratch, or drill into the hardwood flooring. Electrical outlets are available on various walls and in the floor (refer to photographs in PDF provided for electrical outlet layout).
