Subject: Birds of the Midwest Region and Migrating Birds of the Midwest Region

Medium: All 2D mediums including (but not limited to) oil, acrylic, watercolor, printmaking, & photography as well as sculptural works in various media.

Restrictions: Artwork must be created in the past three years. Artwork may not be created in a workshop or class and must be original in conception and execution. Artwork dimensions must not exceed 36" in any direction (including frame). No work shall exceed 30 lbs.

Criteria for submission: 
A maximum of two entries may be submitted for review, but only one work may be admitted. A maximum of one digital image per two-dimensional work and one digital image per three-dimensional work may be submitted.

Notification: All submitting artists will be notified by email of selection decisions before mid-April 2023. No selection decisions will be released over the telephone or via postal service. Upon selection, packaging and shipping instructions will be sent to artist.

Artist Responsibilities: Artists are responsible for all packing and crating costs. If unavailable to deliver in-person, artist is responsible for shipping and return shipping.
Mounting, matting, and framing are the responsibility of the artist. All 2D work must be professionally framed with hanging wire -- NO SAWTOOTH HANGERS OR PLASTIC FRAMES. In the case of sculpture, the work must be ready for display.

NEW for 2023: 20% commission on sold works. IAS/ IDBF will be responsible for taking payment and will submit checks for payment to artist at the end of the exhibition.. Works can be marked NFS.

Work will be on display during the Indiana Dunes Birding Festival at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center located at 1215 N SR49, Chesterton, IN 46304. Artist reception for accepted work will be held on Wednesday May 10th 2023 from 6-8pm CT as part of the "pre-festival" activities.

About the Juror:

Melissa Washburn is an artist/illustrator/graphic designer based just outside Chicago in Northwest Indiana. She grew up in upstate New York, but has lived in the Midwest since 1996. She creates expressive illustrations in both digital and traditional media, endlessly inspired by things that run, fly, and grow.

An avid hiker and birder, in 2019 she earned her Indiana Master Naturalist certification through Gabis Arboretum and the Indiana DNR and now serves on the Marketing and Communications committee of the Shirley Heinze Land Trust.

Application Requirements

All 2D mediums including (but not limited to) oil, acrylic, watercolor, printmaking, & photography as well as sculptural works in various media. Subject matter MUST contain a species of bird(s) of the Midwest Region and/or migrating bird(s) of the Midwest Region.

Eligibility Criteria

Artists 18 and over are eligible to apply. 

2D works must be professionally framed with a wire for hanging -- NO SAWTOOTHS will be accepted as a form of hanging and will automatically be rejected from the show if delivered without proper hanging. Sculptural work must be display ready or a time with the DBArt crew should be scheduled in advance for special installation requirements.
