The Long Beach Creative Group (LBCG) is excited to announce an open call for Pop-Surrealism

Pop-surrealism is often defined as an edgy kind of art. Originally considered “lowbrow” it has now evolved into a reputable art style. Pop-surrealism has broad cultural roots: underground comix, punk rock, tiki culture, graffiti, and hot-rod culture, as well as skateboarding, fantasy art, and surrealism. It often incorporates cheerful, impish, or sarcastic humor. (Wikipedia)

Because it is such a broad style, we have divided pop-surrealism into six smaller categories: Surreal/fantasy, spooky, whimsical, tiki culture, comics, and graffiti/skateboarding/hotrod art. These categories overlap, but you can get a general idea if you go to google images and type in pop-surrealism and the category you are interested in.

Original works of art in the following media are welcome: painting, drawing, printmaking, wall-mount sculpture, sculpture, digital art, photographs, toys, and mixed media. Work must have been produced within the last five years.

Important Dates:

Deadline to submit work: Wednesday, March 22, 10:59pm.

Notification to artists: Week of April 3.

Work dropped off at the gallery: April 15 and 16, 1-3pm.

Two Openings:  April 29 and 30, 1-4pm.

The show runs from April 29 to May 27, Friday through Sunday, 1-4pm.

Artists pick up work on May 27th 4-6pm, or May 28th 1-3pm.

Deadline: Wednesday, March 22, at 10:59PM. We recommend you plan to submit your work at least one week before the deadline. So many little things can happen that require you to save your entry and get more information, retake a photograph, etc.

Application Requirements

Maximum size in any direction: 48 inches, including the frame.

If you plan to mat your image, it still needs to fit in a frame no larger than 48 inches in any direction. Work exceeding these dimensions will be disqualified.

Sales: All work must be for sale.

Ready to Hang: This means it is delivered with the proper weight of picture wire and sturdy d-rings. No saw-toothed hangers!

Paintings on canvas do not need frames, but the edges should be clean. Works on paper are generally framed.  Artists may be asked to provide their own pedestal for three-dimensional work, painted white and clean.

Work must be neatly and professionally presented. If work is brought in that is not professionally presented, it will not be included in the show.

Submissions: There is a $16 non-refundable fee for entry, regardless of whether your work is selected for the show.

Each artist may submit a maximum of 3 works.

Photographing your work: All art should be photographed straight on, with a high resolution. Photos should be cropped to the edge of the image to eliminate background—such as the frame, or the surface behind the artwork.
