Roots will be an open exhibition of works created by members of the Textile Study
Group of New York (TSGNY). This exhibition will be held at El Barrio’s Artspace PS109,
located at 215 E. 99th Street, on the upper east side of NYC. El Barrio’s Artspace
PS109 was an abandoned public school that was transformed and reopened as a
community arts facility in 2014. The exhibit space will encompass two floors of this
special building.
The theme of the exhibition, Roots, offers a wide scope for artistic interpretation: think
both literally and figuratively. The exhibit will highlight the diversity of styles, textile
materials, and techniques in the work of TSGNY artists. Both two- and three-dimensional
work will be considered.
Venue:
El Barrio’s Artspace PS109 is a community-driven project which transformed an
abandoned public school in East Harlem into an arts facility. The project boasts 89 units
of affordable live/work units for artists and their families, as well as 10,000 square feet of
complimentary space to four non-profit arts organizations; HiArts, La Casa de Herencia,
Shakespeare Forum and the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance. Exhibition and multi-purpose
spaces are curated year-round, providing access and opportunities for exposure to
artists, and creatives, and for engagement to the community at large.
Dates:
The exhibition will open on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, and runs through Wednesday,
May 31, 2023. The opening reception will be on Thursday, May 11, 2023 from 5 – 8 PM.
