The Public Art Commission of Salida (PAC) in tandem with the City of Salida invites artists to apply for a call of a visual art piece in a pre-determined outdoor space in late-Fall 2023. The PAC is looking for a 3-D outdoor sculpture/work/installation that is contemporary and can be viewable from a distance. The selected artist’s or artist-lead team’s work will be installed in an outdoor location near a multi-use trail at an entrance to the downtown business sector and the Creative Arts District adjacent to an urban skate park and downtown section of Highway 291.
The enhancement of this public place by integrating the creative work of artists improves the pedestrian experience and acts as a “gateway” into the heart of Salida. Ideally, the considered concept should be considered a “landmark” that can be associated with Salida, one that will draw attention and encourage engagement. Artists/artist teams will be selected based on artistic excellence and demonstration of skill and quality craftsmanship conveyed in examples of past work, resume, and the strength and originality of concept.
Salida is a located in the Upper Arkansas River Valley in south central Colorado and sits at just over 7,000 feet in elevation. Known as the “Heart of the Rockies,” Salida boasts a host of artists, creative enterprises, cultural activities and recreational pursuits that make the city unique and a top tourist destination. Since 2012, the City of Salida’s historic downtown has been a “Certified Creative District,” which has given Salida a surge of energy and a foundation to build upon while also publicizing the thriving creative community and businesses in town. The variety of amenities provide a broad demographic of locals and visitors with a fun, educational and inspiring environment.
The proposed art 1) should be appropriate for the surrounding uses; 2) should be an integral part of the site in materials and scale; 3) should be unique, and be thoughtfully integrated into the existing environment; 4) must meet or exceed standards for structural integrity and durability; 5) must be weather, vandal, and graffiti resistant; 6) and must meet or exceed standards for public safety.
The total size of the space is 18’ by 16’ and is nestled between the Monarch Spur Trail and a local business with a small water tributary nearby. The total height of the work should not exceed 20’. The City of Salida will provide reasonable care with regard to security and maintenance. It is recommended that artists visit the site prior to submitting an application.
This call is open to all artists, but preference will be given to artists/artist teams including regional artists residing within 500 miles of Salida and who have the background, experience and reputation for completing such a project. Commissioned or artist-owned work, if appropriate, will be considered. The selected artwork may not be duplicated within 200 miles of the site. Artists/artist team members must be at least 18 years of age, and legally residing and authorized to work in the United States.
