New Painting

Online Exhibition June 15, 2023 – July 15, 2023

New Painting is looking to represent a wide variety of styles and movements, united by unique and unexpected investigations of surface, depth, color, and form. Whether belonging to a distinct tradition, intermingling genres and techniques to create a work that reinvents the old in light of the new, or striving to form a new visual language altogether, Site:Brooklyn aims to bring together the most exciting work in contemporary painting.

About the Juror:

Rachel Gugelberger Rachel Raphaela Gugelberger is the curator of visual arts at Wave Hill, a public garden and cultural center in the Bronx. Exhibitions include This Place We Once Remembered, opening Apr 22 at Wave Hill; Storying and This side, or the other…., the culminating exhibitions as part of Residency Unlimited’s NYC-based artist program; Bound up Together: On the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment at Smack Mellon, Brooklyn; Jameco Exchange, a site-responsive exhibition and socially engaged education platform in a vacant storefront in Jamaica, Queens; and Bring in the Reality at Nathan Cummings Foundation in Manhattan. Exhibitions on the intersection of art and data include Once Upon a Time There was the End, Center for Book Arts, New York, NY; Data Deluge, Ballroom Marfa, TX; and Library Science, Artspace, New Haven, CT.

Gugelberger is a guest curator at Residency Unlimited (RU) and an Editorial Fellow at Independent Media Institute where she is the founding editor of &Art, a project of Earth I Food I Life (EFL), which highlights the work of cultural workers who integrate art, environmentalism, food justice, and intersectional animal rights. She has served as curator at No Longer Empty (NLE), a non-profit organization that curated site-responsive and community-centered exhibitions, education, and programs in unique spaces, where she also served as the inaugural director of the NLE Curatorial Lab. Prior, Gugelberger was a curator at Exit Art where she curated the organization’s final exhibition, Every Exit Is an Entrance: 30 Years of Exit Art and co-curated Collective/Performative.
