Interlines, Lifelines, Redlines: Social Markers of Race, Class, & Economics 
A juried call for photography

Building on work done for the Farm Security Administration, (FSA) and what might be for some, a new way of seeing, we are launching a Call for Entries for photographs to explore or document a whole range of objects, structures or situations that consciously or unconsciously assign value or status of a neighborhood or community. This is an open ended call for all images to explore, document, comment or reflect on how we inventory the world around us.

Interlines: Lifelines, Redlines & Social Markers looks to capture the present through a wider lens, to explore and question what you see in your community, what you see in neighboring communities? “Good Neighborhoods” “Bad Neighborhoods” what are the visual markers that let you know which kind of neighborhood you are in? What are the landmarks, the cues or markers that make you feel safe or unsafe as you navigate your world? As we discuss infrastructure on a national level, what landmarks, signposts or stores do you use to evaluate need, health, or affluence of a community?  This is a call to explore social markers… to start conversations… to ask the question, is your fear real?

IMPORTANT TIMELINE DATES

Exhibition: Thursday, September 21st thru Friday, October 13th, 2023
Registration Deadline:  August 15th

Juror: Eric Kunsman,  Eric is a photographer and book artist based out of Rochester, New York where he owns and operates Booksmart Studio. Eric works at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) as an Assistant Professor for the Visual Communications Studies Department at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and is an Assistant Professor for the School of Photographic Arts & Sciences. 

Eric was named one of 10 B&W photographers to watch of 2018 by BWGallerist; B&W Best Photographers of the Year 2019 by Dodho Magazine; won the Association of Photography (UK) Gold Award for Open Series in 2019; Finalist, Top 200 Critical Mass 2019, 2020, 2021; Top 15 Photographers for the Rust Belt Biennial; and Lensculture B&W Jurors’ Pick 2021. His Project Felicific Calculus was also awarded a Warhol Foundations Grant through CEPA Gallery in Buffalo, NY. Eric’s work has also been published in magazines such as; Bloomberg Businessweek, LensWork, Dodho, B&W Photography, Analog Explorations, All About Photo, Black+White Photography (UK), Dek Unu, along with online articles by Analog Forever Magazine, Catalyst: Interview, Texas Photo Society, and others.

Located in the heart of Providence, RICPA was founded to inspire creative development and provide opportunities to engage with the community through exhibitions, education, publication and mutual support. 

RICPA exists to create a diverse and supportive community for individuals interested in learning or working in the Photographic Arts. Printing Services prize provided by Booksmart Studio

Eligibility: Artists of all levels who are at least 18 years or older are invited to enter.

Artwork: Open to all forms of photographic image-making in any process or technology, current or historical. Work must be your original creation. All work must be exhibition ready, no saw-tooth hangers please. Work that does not follow the guidelines, or is deemed not to be a faithful representation of the image submitted, will not be exhibited.

Entry Fee:  Artists may submit up to 20 photographs. The entry fee is $25 for the first image and $5 for each subsequent image. If you want your entry juried as a set, rather than as individual images, contact the gallery@riphotocenter.org Current RICPA Members receive a 20% discount on the entry fee. The discount code is posted in the Call Listing on our website at https://www.riphotocenter.org. You must login to our website for the code to be visible. All CAFE fees are non-refundable and must be paid by credit/debit card.  Current Paid Membership is required to be eligible for Grand Prizes sponsored by Fuji USA. Cash Prizes are available to all entrants. Payment of the fee indicates the acknowledgement of the terms and conditions of the exhibition.  Juror’s decisions are final. Size Limit: Maximum size 48” including the frame. Artists may have multiple pieces (diptych, triptych etc.) to make up one work.  

In-Person Delivery of Accepted Work: In-person deliveries will be accepted September 16th, noon till 5:30pm or by appointment. The RICPA Gallery is located on the 2nd Floor at 118 North Main Street Providence, RI 

Shipment of Accepted Work:  Shipped deliveries should be scheduled to arrive by September 16th. Shipped work must be accompanied by a prepaid, return label. Please make sure that you label your work on the back with your name or name on the shipping label if different. 

Print Service: Save on shipping fees and take advantage of our professional print service complete with frame rental for the duration of the exhibition. Email gallery@riphotocenter.org for more information, available for accepted entries starting at for $40 prints framed up to 16” x 20”

Return of Work: For artists who delivered their art in-person pickup will be on October 14th. Shipped art will be returned in the packaging in which it was sent using the provided prepaid return shipping label. The artist is solely responsible for any charges that may arise from inadequate packaging, or redirected shipments.

Sales & Commissions: The Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts retains a 40% commission on works sold, 20% for Supporting & Exhibiting members.

Liability - Legal Agreement & Participant’s Waiver:  Submission of work automatically waives any claim for damage or loss against RI Center for Photographic Arts, including the officers, members, and employees. RICPA will exercise all reasonable care in handling entries, but will not assume any liability for loss or damage while in RICPA’s possession or in transit. Work should be independently insured by the artist.

Usage Rights: The artist retains all copyright to the images submitted. By submitting images you are giving RICPA the right to use the images for the purpose of marketing the exhibition and for reproduction online. Work accepted for exhibition will also be included in a very limited edition bound volume or artist book, produced by Booksmart Studio, to document the project. Artists grant the use of their image(s) as stated without further contact or compensation from RICPA. Artist’s recognition is provided with any use. Submitting artists will be added to RICPA’s email subscriber list. They may opt out using a link on each email at any time. RICPA reserves the right to adjust any deadline(s) as the result of causes beyond its immediate control.  Payment of the submission fee indicates acknowledgement of all terms and conditions.
