Gearbox Gallery invites submissions to our 2023 Juried Exhibition, Within Sight or From Imagination.

Within Sight or From Imagination invites work that is imaginative, observational and/or introspective. It encompasses internal and/or external worlds, and the intersection of these worlds. According to juror Jeremy Morgan, “The paintings become pivotal points between external stimuli: a meeting place of the material and non-material.”

You are invited to fall down the rabbit hole where Alice grapples with the logic of her own mind as she tries to make sense of the material world within her sight.

Gearbox invites you to submit artwork that reflects your interpretation of what is real, imagined, hoped for or the intersection of internal and external worlds.

JUROR: Jeremy Morgan

Born in 1956 in Cambridge, England, Morgan was educated at the Ruskin school of Drawing (University of Oxford )1974-77, The Royal Academy Schools (RA) London 1979-82 and at the San Francisco Art Institute1983-85 (as a Harkness Fellow between 1983-1985).

Jeremy Morgan, a Bay Area icon, is best known regionally as an Associate Professor of Painting at San Francisco Art Institute where he taught from 1989-2022 in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. He also taught at John F. Kennedy, Berkeley, CA, (Arts and Consciousness program), California Collage of Art, Oakland, and as a visiting Professor at China Academy of Art and the Shanghai Academy of fine Arts. Jeremy has also given various workshops in China (CAA Hangzhou, CAA Beijing, Luxan Academy, Shenyang) and is a vision board member with the Lucid Art Foundation in California.

Jeremy comments, “My work as a painter is an exploration of philo-spiritual aspects of landscape and nature-based painting referring in particular to Asian and Western traditions in relation to concepts of the abstract. The work is augmented by an increasing interest in the use of technological processes as a means by which (allied with painting) one might reveal that which lies beyond appearance alone.”

His work is represented in several private and public collections including Lucent technologies, CA, Berringer Wineries, Napa, CA, Saks 5th Avenue, New York and in the collections of CAFA Beijing /CAA Hangzhou /LAFA Shenyang, and in the Shandong Art Museum, Jinan, China.
