Juror | This is a juried exhibition, and it will be co-curated by exhibition juror, Glen McClure, and by gallery manager and Center Curator, Amanda Bradley. Juror Bio: Born in Norfolk and a lifelong resident of Virginia, Glen McClure has brought the people and places of the US and Europe into focus through his photography. His path began to unfold after he purchased his first camera at 19. As a photographer's assistant at the Studio Center in Norfolk and then as photography manager at Arthur Polizos Associates, Glen immersed himself in the art of photography, learning all that he could from each experience and exploring the magic and potential of his medium. McClure's next venture as an independent commercial photographer led to the evolution of his artistic portraits and landscapes. Gradually, his photographs of people going about their daily lives coalesced into his first portrait solo exhibition in 2002 (Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, Virginia Beach). His portraits of "real people" in their natural habitats are now internationally known for their stunning quality and disarming directness, in black and white and in color. McClure's uncanny ability to coax people into sitting for portraits was accompanied by his deep love of world travel. So, concurrently, just as portraits of people began to fill Glen's portfolio, so portraits of places started to form a large body of his work. McClure's travels across Virginia, as well as to Italy, France, and Ireland have inspired his work with the unpopulated landscape—haunting, panoramic images of natural wonders in all weather and atmospheric conditions. Influenced by early 20th-century photographers Josef Sudek and Paul Strand, McClure's work is recognized for masterful photographic techniques and for inviting strong and immediate connections between subject and viewer. During the past two decades, McClure has had more than 75 solo and 50 group exhibitions in the US and Europe. Fully illustrated catalogues have accompanied many of these exhibitions. His work can be found in many private collections and museums, including, The Polaroid Collection, The Chrysler Museum, The Mariners Museum; and the Taubman Museum. |
Submission fee | $35.00 for 3 works (one image per submission) $5 for additional submissions (maximum of 10, and one image per submission) |
d’Art Center Brief Description | Our building is located in Norfolk, Virginia, and is comprised of three galleries, resident artist studios, and multiple activity rooms. The d'Art Center's Main Gallery and Vault are rotated monthly with new and nationally curated exhibitions, while our Artist Wing displays our frequently updated 30+ community artists' work. There is always something new to admire during your visit to d'Art Center! |
d’Art Center’s Main Gallery | d’Art Center’s Main Gallery is located within The Center at 740 Boush St. Norfolk Virginia, in the heart of the NEON District; Norfolk’s Art District. d’Art’s 2,200sqft gallery has incredible visibility to Boush Street traffic and pedestrians due to its massive street side window facade. The gallery is also amongst a thriving new apartment community of over 400 new apartments and more than 1,000 residents. |
d’Art Center History | As Norfolk’s community art center, The d’Art Center proudly serves the greater Hampton Roads area by connecting the community with the visual arts. A non-profit 501c (3) organization, d’Art offers both youth and adult art education and classes, exhibits that give the public a broader exposure to many local and national artists, programming and outreach through art in public spaces, and events to showcase local artists, ceramicists, sculptors, fiber artists, and woodworkers. Celebrating thirty five years in 2021, d’Art was founded in 1986 at the College Place location in downtown Norfolk. Modeled after the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia, part of d’Art’s mission from the onset was to provide working artists with affordable, short-term studio space. In 2005, the d’Art Center relocated to the historic Selden Arcade, continuing a legacy as a vibrant arts organization. The d’Art Center remained at the Selden Arcade for the next ten years. After an explosion caused major damage to the d’Art Center at the Selden Arcade, the d’Art Center organization recovered, regrouped, and revived itself in the New Energy of Norfolk (NEON) Arts District at its Duke Grace Building location. In 2021, d’Art Center moved into its forever home in the NEON District: The Atlantic Permanent Building. The NEON District is anchored by the Chrysler Museum of Art, Harrison Opera House, and The d’Art Center, and extends to The Plot on Granby Street. The NEON District includes many creative small businesses and arts partners. |
The Vault | This one hundred and thirty two square foot exhibition space is a historical bank vault within the center, and gives artists an opportunity to exhibit their work in a unique space in the heart of Norfolk Arts District (The NEON District). All styles and aesthetics are considered. |
