Prospectus

Our Mission:  To provide residencies to artists from around the world to pursue their creative process on the shores of Lake Superior.

The Point Iroquois Artist-In-Residence program is brought to you by The Sault Area Art Center in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan.  We offer three 10 day residences, one each for a photographer, a writer and a visual artist.  We are currently accepting applications for the following dates:

September 7-16, 2023

November 9-18, 2023

April 18-27, 2024

The Point Iroquois Beach Cabin is located on the shores of Lake Superior a short walk from Point Iroquois Lighthouse in Brimley, MI.  It is a small, modern 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom cabin with a full kitchen and internet service.   See more details and photographs on our website at https://saultartcenter.com/air

There is a darkroom available close by.  There is no studio space in the cabin, but we can accommodate by putting down a tarp and having an easel available in one of the rooms.

Lake Superior contains 10% of the fresh water in the world.  The cabin is centrally located in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula close to hiking trails and Lake Superior overlooks. It is one hour from Tahquamenon Falls and Whitefish point, 30 minutes from the Sault Locks, 45 minutes from Mackinaw Island, 2 hours from Pictured Rocks and Kitch-iti-kipi springs and close to streams and waterfalls.  The location is close to all the Upper Peninsula has to offer.

We will select one applicant each from photographer, visual artist and writer (individual, couple, or cohort up to three) for a ten day residency.

During their residency, each artist will share their experience in one public program, demonstration, talk, workshop, etc.

Each artist will contribute one original piece of work representative of their residency to the permanent collection of the Sault Area Art Center.   Donated pieces will be delivered within one year, framed, bound or otherwise gallery ready.

Applications will be accepted from individuals, couples and cohorts of up to three people.  Individuals are permitted to have one guest.  BIPOC artists are highly encouraged to apply.
