The Arvada Arts & Culture Commission is seeking qualifications from visual artists currently living in Colorado to design a large-scale art installation using bicycle imagery and motifs along a chain link fence at an outdoor bike safety training complex. The bike safety training complex is used to teach bike safety to children and to encourage bike exploration of Arvada’s many paths, trails, parks, and streets. The site is located directly across from the Arvada Costco at 52nd and Wadsworth in Arvada, Colorado. The selected artist will be awarded $10,000 which includes all necessary elements to successfully design, create, and install the artwork.
The installation site consists of up to 220 linear feet of 8’ chain link fence at the bike safety training complex. Installation must attach to the chain link fence and be visually interesting to viewers from the street and viewers from within the bike safety training complex.
The Arvada Arts & Culture Commission will review and select up to 4 finalists based on their resumes & previous work examples. These finalists will be asked to complete a full proposal for their concept for this art activation. The finalists that are not awarded the commission will be given an honorarium of $250 for the completion of the full proposals for the activation. The artist/s selected for the commission will be awarded a contract for $10,000 from the City of Arvada to complete the project.
The activation should be a dynamic artwork that promotes bicycle safety, be child-friendly, and can attach securely to a chain link fence.
Budgets are inclusive of all costs associated with the installation, including, but not limited to, materials, artist design fee, installation labor, travel, per diem expenses, project documentation, equipment rental, unexpected expenses, and any other costs related to the creation of the fence activation.
Project Considerations:
- Develop and create a dynamic artwork that promotes bicycle safety, is child-friendly and can attach to a chain link fence
- Design a work that fits well into the context of the site in scale and theme
- Use materials of the highest quality that are designed for durability and low maintenance in an outdoor environment
- Complete the required applications of anti-graffiti and UV protective coating/sealant as needed based on materials
- Complete the project within the set timeline and within the budget
- The artist agrees to participate in any press or media opportunities as they arise, such as print, interviews, discussions, and presentations as deemed necessary by the Arvada Arts & Cultural Commission
- The artist will not be responsible for general maintenance of the artwork once completed, but agrees to be available after services have been completed for repair consultation if needed
