The Bryan Artist in Residence will have an opportunity to live and work in a home located right in the heart of Downtown Bryan generously donated by BCS Modern. This program allows the artist to spend their time creating, experimenting, and adding to their portfolio. The term of each residency is roughly one year, mid-August 2023 to mid-July 2024. The selected artist will live in a 1140 square foot apartment.  

Housing will include utilities (water, electricity, and internet). The artist will also receive a $3,000 stipend from The Arts Council to assist with groceries, fuel, and supply purchases, paid in full at the beginning of the residency.

What does BCS Modern and The Arts Council offer?

• BCS Modern and The Arts Council will offer to one selected artist an 1140 sq. ft. living space and studio with utilities (internet, water, and electricity) free for the term of the residency.
• Selected artists are required to supply their own materials, equipment, food, transportation, and all other bills.
• The residency is for individual artists – no partners, spouses, or long-term guests are allowed.
• The artist will receive a $3,000 stipend over the term of the residency, paid in full at the beginning of the residency. If the artist should leave the residency early, the artist will need to return a pro-rated (as determined by the Arts Council) amount of the stipend back to the Arts Council.
• The artist may also have a part-time job during the residency, no more than 20 hours a week.
• The Arts Council will offer PR opportunities including radio interviews, promotion at Arts Council events, inclusion in newsletters, attendance at Arts Council events, etc.

What is required of the artist?

The artist is required to fulfill all responsibilities put in place by the Arts Council of Brazos Valley including but not limited too:

• The Artist agrees to participate in Downtown Bryan’s art community by participating
  in events including by not limited to: First Fridays (monthly), ArtStep (monthly), and
  Downtown Street & Art Fair (April). Participation will be coordinated through The Arts
  Council’s Program Manager.
• The Artist must make regular public appearances and complete marketing
  opportunities including, but not limited to, radio interviews, TV interviews, and
  newspaper articles.
• The Artist may be asked to participate in events or programs as stipulated in advance
  by The Arts Council’s Program Manager.

Living/Working Arrangements

• The artist must live and work in the housing provided in Bryan, Texas for entire term of the residency.
• The artist will be provided free utilities and living space, but is responsible for all groceries, equipment, and supplies necessary for the production of their artwork. They are also responsible for any other bills.
• The living space of the unit is unfurnished, and the artist is required to bring all necessary furniture and household items.
• The residency does not furnish any supplies/equipment such as kilns, darkrooms, forges, or power tools.  The artist will be responsible for bringing their own equipment or finding a place in the area to rent.
• The artist will be responsible for all transportation to, from, and during the residency. Public transportation/walkability is limited, and applicants must bring their own vehicles.
• The artist is responsible for the upkeep of and any damage to the living and working quarters. They will be required to following the leasing requirements of BCS Modern.
• The artist must be the sole occupant of their residency location.  No spouses, partners, or long-term guests are allowed. No pets or animals allowed.
• All participating artists must be able to pass a background check.
• Artists may hold a part-time job during this residency program.  If they should pursue a part-time job, they are responsible for procuring said job and should not work more than 20 hours a week. The focus of the residency should be on the creation of new work, experimentation, and expansion of artistic portfolios.

Teaching Opportunities

• The Arts Council may have paid teaching opportunities available for participating artists, but these are not guaranteed.

Shows/Sales

• Any pieces sold by the artist in art fairs, gallery shows, or events organized or managed by The Arts Council, or sold out of the workspace, will have a 70/30 commission split, with 70% going to artist and 30% going to The Arts Council. 2.5% credit card fees will be deducted if required. Artist must follow sales procedures of The Arts Council, including documenting and collecting sales tax.

Application Requirements

Submission, Deadlines & Interviews:

• All materials must be received by Monday, June 26, 2023, through the Call for Entry application.

• Final applicants will be selected for an interview with the selection committee. Interviews may be done via phone or webcam at the discretion of The Arts Council.
• Final decisions will be made no later than mid/end of July.

Applicants must be available to live in Bryan for the entire one-year term of the residency. Applicants must be fluent in English, have reliable transportation they will bring with them, and be eligible to live in the United States for the entire term of the residency program.
