The Arts Council is excited to announce its first ever Workspace Residency opportunity, open to students or recently-graduated artists.The Workspace Resident will have access to a private studio and community wet room at the Arts Council of Brazos Valley in College Station, TX. Residents will create artwork in their studio, display their work in the Arts Council Satterwhite Conference Center, and have their own gallery show at the conclusion of their residency. 

Residents will be given an $800 stipend in October, plus a $250 monthly stipend until the end of the term in July (9 months). Residents will have access to their studio during all Arts Council business Hours. 

What do the City of College Station and The Arts Council offer?

  • Access to a studio space during Arts Council office hours in which to create new works.
  • An $800 stipend in October, plus a $250 monthly stipend until the end of the term in July (9 months) to assist with supply purchases and groceries.
  • Mentorship sessions with area artists on how to install an exhibit, how to conduct sales and manage your financial affairs as an independent artist, and continuing education.
  • A show and opening in a local gallery organized and funded by The Arts Council.

What is required of the artist?

The artist is required to fulfill all responsibilities put in place by the Arts Council of Brazos Valley including but not limited too:

  • The Artist will meet with the Program Director or other Arts Council Representative on a regular basis to discuss progress and work.
  • Allow guests (accompanied by Arts Council Staff) into their studio for the purpose of viewing while the artist is not present.
  • The artist must be available for an opening reception of his or her show and ribbon cutting on a date/time to be determined between the Artist and Program Director.
  • The Artist must make regular public appearances at Art Council and community events.
  • Complete marketing opportunities including, but not limited to, radio interviews, TV interviews, and newspaper articles.
  • Applicants must be available to spend 30 hours a week in the studio during office hours from September 1st, 2023 to mid/late July, 2024.
  • Applicants must have a reliable vehicle and insurance.
  • Applicants must be able to pass a background check.

Housing is NOT provided – artists must secure their own accommodation in College Station for the duration of their residency.

Workspace Arrangements

  • The artist is responsible for the upkeep of the studio and must pay a deposit if required.
  • The artist must be the sole occupant of the studio.
  • The artist may store artwork in the studio.
  • The artist must pass a background check prior to the offer.
  • No travel costs to or from College Station will be provided.
  • The Arts Council will provide:
    • Basic work table and chair
    • Basic overhead lighting
    • Electricity
    • Wi-Fi
    • Heat and air conditioning seasonally during regular business hours

Teaching Opportunities

The City of College Station and The Arts Council may have paid teaching opportunities available for participating artists.

Shows/Sales

  • Any pieces sold by the artist in art fairs or gallery shows/events organized by The Arts Council, or sold out of the studio workspace will be a 70/30 split, with 70% going to artist and 30% going to The Arts Council. The artist must follow sales procedures of The Arts Council, including documenting and collecting sales tax.
  • Artist is responsible for managing the Arts Council Conference Room Gallery including hanging and displaying works, sales, etc.

Application Requirements

Submission, Deadlines & Interviews

  • All materials must be received by Monday, June 26, 2023, through the Call for Entry application.

  • Final applicants will be selected for an interview with the selection committee. Interviews may be done via phone or webcam at the discretion of The Arts Council.
  • Final decisions will be made no later than mid/end of July.

Eligibility Criteria

Who is Eligible?

  •  Any current student enrolled in a visual arts program at a community college or university, or a graduate of a visual arts program at a community college, four year university, or master’s program in the past 2 years.
  • Applicants must be visual artists who concentrate in one of the following areas:
    • 2-D Mixed media - Includes collage and handmade paper, incorporates more than one type of material, and has a relief depth of less than 1/8 inch.
    • 3-D Mixed media - Works with more than 1/8 inch of relief depth - This category is for objects that are "decorative" rather than "useful".
    • Drawing - Pencil, charcoal, chalk, pastels, etc.
    • Painting - Oil, acrylics, etc.
    • Photography – Film or digital photography.
    • Sculpture - all media
    • Watercolor - Layered and pigmented water-based media including; acrylic, gouache, tempera and transparent watercolors applied to archival acid-free stock or handmade papers.
  • Applicants must be available to spend 30-40 hours a week in the studio during office hours from September 1st, 2023 to mid/late July, 2024.
  • Applicants must have a reliable vehicle and insurance.
  • Applicants must be able to pass a background check.
