Arts Council of Lake Oswego invites artists working in any medium to submit an artwork, or a proposal for an artwork, in response to a piece of art from Lake Oswego’s permanent art collection. New artworks and existing permanent collection pieces will be curated into an exhibition on view at the ARTspace gallery September 8 - October 27, 2023.

As the only dedicated non-profit visual arts gallery in the city of Lake Oswego, the Arts Council and its ARTspace gallery have a unique opportunity to inspire thought and conversation through art. Arts Council of Lake Oswego's mission is to ensure that arts are an accessible and integral part of life in our community.

Permanent Collection Artworks

The goal of this exhibition is to bring together a diverse group of artists, selected from this call for art, whose work explores, contextualizes, and re-imagines pieces from the City of Lake Oswego’s permanent art collection. 

The piece you submit for the jury’s consideration must respond to one, or more, of the following works of art (clicking on the title of each artwork will take you to its entry on the Public Art Archive):

  • Jonnel Covault, Spring Day, 2004, block print (available to view online anytime and at ARTspace Gallery August 15-31)
  • Deborah Dewit-Marchant, Haunts of a Pre-Raphaelite, 1992, photograph (available to view online anytime and at the Lake Oswego Public Library)

Artist Benefits

Accepted work will be exhibited in our ARTspace gallery from September 8 through October 27, 2023. The gallery is free and open to the public Tuesdays through Fridays, 10am to 5pm. Artists are asked to offer their works for sale, with the understanding that the Arts Council takes a 30% commission. Various programs are planned during the exhibition to add dimension and provide more opportunities for visitors to see and engage with the artwork.

Application Requirements

How to Enter & Fees

$30 to apply. Entry fee is waived if you are a current member of the Arts Council at the Friend ($50) level or above. Not sure if you’re a member? Give us a call to find out: 503-675-3738.

Your entry fee helps support continued access to free arts programming, including free entry to the ARTspace gallery, virtual and in-person events for all ages, and additional arts programming throughout the year. Please reach out to us via email if this cost presents a barrier for participation.

Application & Image Requirements

  • Clear and high resolution photo of original artwork being submitted in JPEG, PNG or PDF format. For proposals, please include clear photos of previously completed works of art as samples and/or clear photos of sketches, etc. of work being proposed.
  • A brief description of the artwork, or proposal, and explanation of how you were inspired by a work of art in the City of Lake Oswego’s permanent art collection  (please only select from artworks featured on the “Permanent Collection Artworks” list included in this call).
  • Include the title, date, medium, and dimensions of the artwork, or proposal, you are submitting.
  • Include an up-to-date artist statement.
  • Provide your contact info including website and/or social media handles.
  • Only one work of art per artist will be considered for exhibition, but you may submit up to 3 work samples.

Eligibility Criteria

This exhibition is open to all artists. All media will be considered. Artwork must be original. 

  • Artwork must be ready for exhibition upon arrival. Framed works must include wire for hanging with appropriate hanging hardware and installation instructions, and clearly labeled with the artist's name and title of the work. NO sawtooth hangers, please.
  • 3D works must be ready for display. Test your framing/presentation before sending it.
  • Digital works must be able to be stored and displayed using a standard USB drive.
  • Any special hardware or display requirements must be provided by the artist.
  • If shipping artwork, the artist is responsible for shipping/delivery costs both ways (please see more on shipping).
  • Works will be assessed for exhibition based on the quality and completeness of the artist’s proposal, the artist's existing body of work, as well as the relationship of the artwork to the permanent collection piece(s).
  • We are looking for a diversity of media and forms of expression. BIPOC, LGBTQ2+, emerging, mid-career, and professional artists are encouraged to apply.
  • Accepted artwork must be for sale and submitted with that intent.

Shipping/Delivery

Accepted artwork must arrive to the ARTspace Gallery by September 5, 2023, and must include return shipping labels or artists must plan to pick up their work if not sold. Artists are responsible for round trip shipping and insurance (during shipping) of artworks. All shipments must include a prepaid return shipping label or shipping charge account number and be shipped in a container appropriate for reuse in return shipping.

Sales

All sales will be handled through ACLO. A 30% commission will be charged. All pieces must remain up for the duration of the exhibition. Payment for any sold work(s) will be remitted by check to the artist at the end of the exhibition.

Artwork not sold during the duration of the exhibition must be picked up by November 8, 2023. Work with prepaid return shipping will be returned during the two weeks following the close of the exhibition. ACLO will retain possession of artwork left beyond December 31, 2023, and/or work with insufficient return shipping.
