2023 INTERSTATE
A national juried exhibit where I-90 meets I-82
Exhibit Dates: November 2—December 2, 2023

The Sarah Spurgeon Gallery at Central Washington University, located in Ellensburg, Washington, will host the INTERSTATE juried exhibit. Proceeds from this national exhibition will support student scholarships in the CWU Department of Art + Design.

The exhibition is open to submissions in all media and subject matter; the artwork does not need to follow a particular theme. The subtitle, “where I-90 meets I-82” locates the exhibition in Ellensburg, Washington, and suggests the flow and exchange of artwork across geographic distances and boundaries.

The Sarah Spurgeon Gallery, founded in 1969, is dedicated to contemporary art exhibits and related outreach programs that enhance, engage, and challenge the viewer’s knowledge and understanding of art. The Gallery also presents artists and viewers alike with opportunities to explore culturally diverse ideas in an academic environment.

Juror Information:
Stefano Catalani was recently appointed the Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner, Washington, in 2022. Previously, from 2016 to 2021, he served as Executive Director of the Gage Academy of Art, Seattle. During his eleven-year tenure at the Bellevue Arts Museum from 2005 to 2016, first as a Curator then later as the Director of Art, Craft, and Design, he organized and conceived more than twenty acclaimed exhibitions exploring the dynamic field of art, craft, and design. He wrote and contributed to nine exhibition catalogs published by Bellevue Arts Museum including (among others): Knitted, Knotted, Twisted, and Twined: The Jewelry of Mary Lee Hu (2012), and Dim Sum at the On-On Tea Room: The Jewelry of Ron Ho (2007). Catalani also co-authored the exhibition catalogue for the Smithsonian Institution’s 2020 Renwick Invitational Exhibition, Forces of Nature. Originally from Genazzano, a town south of Rome, Italy, Catalani relocated to Seattle in 2001.
