Dawn Holder
Dawn Holder uses ceramics, photography, and installation to investigate the myriad human forces that shape our shared landscape. Using porcelain as a primary medium, her work combines diverse influences, such as Minimalism, Eco-Feminism, and the Necropastoral, to explore topics such as the American lawn, the history of monuments, and ecological imbalance.
Holder lives in Indianapolis, IN and is an Associate Professor of Studio Art at Indiana University Indianapolis’s Herron School of Art + Design. Holder teaches in the Ceramics area and currently serves as the Graduate Director of the MFA in Visual Arts. She is the recipient of numerous awards and grants and has shown her work in galleries and museums internationally. She earned an MFA in Ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BFA in Ceramics from the University of Georgia.
Jacinda Russell
As a conceptual artist with a longstanding interest in edges, borders, and topographical extremes, Jacinda Russell has examined the impacts of human-accelerated climate change in the polar regions since 2017. She works primarily in the mediums of photography, sculpture, installation, and bookmaking. Her artwork has been exhibited at numerous locations nationally and internationally including the southernmost place on earth, the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. Her photobook Salt. Water. Obstruction., exploring pandemic and environmental loss in the Svalbard Archipelago, will be published by Brown Owl Press in Fall 2023.
Born in Idaho, she received her BFA from Boise State University in Studio Art and her MFA from the University of Arizona. She currently resides in Indianapolis, Indiana and is an Associate Professor of Art at Ball State University.
Erin Holscher Almazan
Erin Holscher Almazan is a Professor of Printmaking and Drawing at the University of Dayton in Dayton, OH. Erin is a native of North Dakota. She received her BFA in Fine Arts from Minnesota State University Moorhead and her MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology, in Rochester, New York. She taught as an Adjunct Instructor in Foundations at Rochester Institute of Technology prior to teaching at the University of Dayton. She has completed two printmaking residencies at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Kasterlee, Belgium. Erin’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and has been included in exhibitions in connection with the Southern Graphics Printmaking Council and the Mid-America Print Council. Erin resides in Dayton with her husband and two sons.
Eligibility
Artists must be 18 years or older and reside in Indiana or adjacent states of Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, or Michigan. All work must be original by the submitting artist and cannot have been exhibited in previous Whitewater Valley Art Competitions.

Artists may choose to submit three different views of each art piece. Artists submitting more than 3 separate art pieces will be eliminated from consideration. Entry fees will not be refunded.

All visual art mediums (except for video and sound) are allowed. Examples of acceptable works include paintings, drawings, printmaking, digital artworks, photographs, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, textiles, installation, and mixed media art pieces.
Conditions and Rules
By submitting work to be considered, artists grant permission to IU East Galleries to reproduce accepted artwork for promotional uses in both printed and electronic forms.
IU East will through pre-recorded & live-streamed video productions allow everyone throughout the country to view every piece of art that is accepted to our 45th Annual Whitewater Valley Art Competition.
Indiana University East Art Galleries and its staff adhere to a professional standard of art display and curatorial practices. The safety of our patrons, students, faculty, and staff is our priority. All 2D and 3D wall mounted work must be ready to hang and include the appropriate or specialized hardware. Work must be professionally framed, firmly wired, prepared for hanging, and professionally presented. Please refrain from using sawtooth hangers. Work cannot exceed 60” in any direction. All reasonable care will be given to objects in the custody of the IU East Galleries. Works are insured while on exhibition in the Tom Thomas Gallery and Meijer Artway exhibition spaces. Please note that our gallery spaces do not feature constant controlled humidity. Indiana University East cannot assume responsibility for the damage or deterioration incurred before or after exhibition, or for possible loss in transit. Prices submitted will be considered as insurance value unless otherwise noted. For works to be labeled "NFS" please include an insurance value on your list of works. If the work has an insurance price of over $500 USD, any insurance claims must be accompanied by documentation or past sales or professional 3rd party appraisals. All artworks must remain available and installed for the duration of the exhibition.
The Artist / Lender maintains all responsibility of insuring all work and accompanying materials during shipping and travel and is responsible for all associated costs. It is imperative that proper arrangements are made before the exhibition including prepayment of all return shipping costs and that work arrives just prior to installation dates. Due to limited space, we will not be able to store work for extended periods. Barring special arrangements agreed upon between the Artist/ Lender and Gallery Technician, artworks and any equipment or materials related to the installation of the show remaining on campus for more than 30 days from the closing exhibition date will become the property of Indiana University East Galleries. September 22nd, 2023 ; 10am –12:30pm: Prerecorded juried rounds shared on Facebook Live. Breaks between juried rounds will allow time for live questions from the audience.
Friday, September 29, 5 pm: Deadline for accepted entries to be postmarked or received at IU East. Artists my ship or hand deliver artwork to the Tom Thomas Gallery. Please make an appointment if hand delivering.
Friday, October 13th, 6-8 pm: Artist’s reception and awards presentation, Tom Thomas Gallery @ IU East
October 13 – December 15: Whitewater Valley Art Exhibit in Tom Thomas Gallery and Meijer Artway.
December 18 – 20, 11 am – 1pm: Exhibit artwork collected by artist or shipped back to artist with return shipping label.
