Color Theory
Online Exhibition October 11, 2023 - November 11, 2023
Color has always possessed a dual nature, representing the heights of feeling and emotion while at the same time seen as a scientific, empirical phenomenon, arising from the physical world. Color, as an independent visual language, exploded in contemporary art, moving beyond the binary of spiritual truth and nature, and into the worlds of advertisement, repetition, and digital life more broadly. What is the role of color today? Site:Brooklyn is looking for artists whose work engages with this question.
About the Juror: Kaegan Sparks is a curator, writer, art historian, and educator based in New York City. She has held curatorial, editorial, and research-based positions at art institutions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Dia Art Foundation, and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, and is a graduate of the Whitney Independent Study Program. She has curated many exhibitions. Her art criticism and book reviews have been published in Artforum, Lux, Movement Research Performance Journal, Bookforum, Art in America, The Brooklyn Rail, and Momus, and has contributed to several museum exhibition catalogues. Sparks is currently completing a PhD in art history at The Graduate Center, City University of New York.
About the Gallery: Site:Brooklyn Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting the current practice of contemporary artists. We are taking Site:Brooklyn online with a new series of interactive exhibitions. Our goal remains the same, to connect artists with an expert and diverse set of jurors through the open call format. Our new program focuses on online open call exhibitions, selected by a cast of new jurors, solo artist features, and spotlights.
