FALL 2023 JURIED UNDERGRADUATE EXHIBITION

Currently enrolled undergraduate students in the School of Art and Design are invited to submit up to four pieces to the Fall 2023 Juried Undergraduate Exhibition. Entry and jurying will happen via Cafe. 

Exhibition Schedule

• Call for entries opens September 1, 2023 and closes September 15 at midnight CST.
• Jurying - September 17-19
• Notification of acceptance September 20
• Artwork Drop-off, October 2
• On view Friday, October 6 - Friday, November 10, 2023
• Awards Ceremony and Reception: Thursday October 5, 5-8 pm, Awards announced at 5 pm, Reception directly afterwards.
• Artwork pickup, November 13-14

Eligibility: 

• Students must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in East Carolina University School of Art and Design.
• Works must be completed between September 2022 and September 2023 as part of coursework in the School of Art and Design.
• All media are eligible.

Entry Requirements: 

• Students may submit up to four individual pieces and may be collaborators on up to five additional pieces. Each individual art piece will be a separate application. (Up to Four individual applications or five collaborative applications under group accounts.)
• There is no fee to enter artwork, however the application will not complete and upload if the payment process is not completed.
• Collaborative pieces must be submitted under a group account at CAFE.

Awards

• Best in Show            $500
• Second Place           $300
• Third Place               $200
• Merit Awards            10 at $100 each
• Friends of the School of Art and Design Awards 2 at $150 each
• Nell Cole Graves Award for Ceramics $50

For group awards, prize money will be distributed evenly. Award funds will be distributed through student financial accounts.

By applying to the exhibition the applicant has agreed for the work to be featured online and for promotional, or publicity purposes.

The School of Art and Design reserves the right to use applicant images for educational, promotional, or publicity purposes. The School and Wellington B. Gray Gallery will not reproduce your work for sale. If an applicant is not a East Carolina University School of Art and Design student the application will be removed from the call.

Jurors

Donté K. Hayes, Antoine Williams, and Johannes Barfield

Antoine Williams is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice utilizes critical studies, radical reimagining, and the surreal to explore Black embodiment existing within and subverting status-quos. He received his MFA from UNC-Chapel Hill and is currently an Assistant Professor of Drawing in the School of Art + Art History at the University of Florida.

Donté K. Hayes is a research-based artist whose work uses clay as a sculptural material to inform history, culture, and memories remembered and imagined. These ceramic artifacts preserve, empower, and document the past and present to initiate healing and understanding for the future. He received his MFA and MA from the University of Iowa and currently resides in New Jersey.

Johannes Barfield is a sample-based visual artist, sound artist, and digital media artist who works in installation, video, photography, extended reality (XR), collage, and sound. His work explores childhood memories, joy, and appropriation as a means for survival, the restitution of artifacts, extinction, and the music played at family cookouts. He was born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and received his MFA in Photography and Film from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he is currently a postdoctoral scholar in the Honors College Department at the University of New Mexico.

Hayes, Williams, and Barfield are exhibiting at the Greenville Museum of Art. Through a range of media including ceramics, audio/visual installations, wheat paste murals, and collages, along with historical African artworks and artifacts from East Carolina University’s Gray Gallery collection, Marauders explores themes of history, memory, ancestry, and futurism. Williams, Hayes, and Barfield’s processes each involve deconstructing concepts and materials from personal and cultural archives as they construct narratives related to the African Diaspora. Creating new intertwined futures as they retrieve, conjure, and manifest the heirlooms they never received, their work combats deculturation and celebrates a new era of cultural reclamation. Marauders will be on display at GMoA from October 6, 2023 to February 24, 2024. An opening reception will be held on Friday, October 6 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm with light refreshments and a chance to meet the artists. Admission to both the exhibition and reception is FREE.

For each application submitted, the following information is required:  

• Title of Work
• Artwork Medium - (what the artwork is made of)
• Work Dimensions - (width x height x depth)
• Course name and number that the artwork was completed in:
  • (e.g.) ART 2230 Illustration Survey or ART 1014 Narrative in Art and Design
• Course Instructor
• Semester work was completed (Fall, spring, or summer), and year.
• Also include- Insurance value, selling price, if work is for sale. If not for sale, mark NFS.
• Include installation and space requirements for each submitted piece. Is there any special installation information? Is it a wall, pedestal or plinth piece (short pedestal for sculptural objects)? What size pedestal or plinth is required? Is a vitrine required?
• Eligibility is open to original artworks by current students. The valuation is as provided by the Lender/Artist.

Artwork Images
One image with description and up to 2 detail images per piece/ application. One detail video of the piece may also be uploaded per application.
