Craft A Force in Contemporary Art

Online Exhibition November 30, 2023 - December 30, 2023

The marriage of craft and art-making is one of humanity's earliest moments. From the Neolithic period onwards, textiles, metals, glass, stone, and other materials were laboriously and carefully woven into images and figures, marking the intersecting and complex paths of commerce, religious and domestic life, and the arts. The Industrial Revolution began the mass manufacture of textiles, making them available to ever larger swaths of society. These materials and methods have been increasingly integrated into the fine arts, creating a flourishing and exciting conjunction. What is the place, and future of craft in contemporary art? Site:Brooklyn is looking to answer this question, with works that range across all styles and mediums.

About the Juror: Annabel Keenan is a Brooklyn-based independent curator and writer specializing in contemporary art and sustainability. She contributes to The Art Newspaper, Brooklyn Rail, Hyperallergic, Artsy, Cultured Magazine, and Avenue Magazine, among others. Keenan has held positions at the Broad Museum, the Eames Foundation, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and worked for several years as a specialist in modern and contemporary prints. She studied art history and Italian at Emory University and has a master's in decorative arts, design history, and material culture from the Bard Graduate Center.

About the Gallery: Site:Brooklyn Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting the current practice of contemporary artists. We are taking Site:Brooklyn online with a new series of interactive exhibitions. Our goal remains the same, to connect artists with an expert and diverse set of jurors through the open call format. Our new program focuses on online open call exhibitions, selected by a cast of new jurors, solo artist features, and spotlights.
