In his poem “The Curtain” — a work ostensibly about winter — Hayden Carruth opens with, “Just over the horizon a great machine of death is roaring and rearing. We can hear it always. Earthquake, starvation, the ever-renewing sump of corpse-flesh.”

Carruth equates winter with the cold, brutal darkness in the world; a cozy cabin with our relatively comfortable lives.

As an individual, how do you balance the weight of the sorrows of the world with the peace and comfort you enjoy in your warm, safe home? How do you reconcile the unbearable and insurmountable tragedy existing in the world with your own life in your own particular place?

Can you turn a blind eye to “the machine”? Avoid the news media, social media, escaping into the joy of the winter holidays, the twinkling lights, the hearth, the warmth, the good cheer? Do we survive the immense machine in the only way we can, simply by living? Should we feel guilt as we are not “banging on the machine,” resisting, fighting? We’re interested in works by artists exploring this territory.

Exhibition runs December 8 to January 6.
