Whether walking in a garden, planting your own, receiving them from friends or lovers, viewing delicious Renaissance flower paintings or walking through the flower market in DTLA, flowers bring joy and happiness to our internal and external worlds. Flowers are symbols of strength, longevity, grace, balance and abundance. We need more flowers right now. I want to fill the Shoebox Projects space with flowers.  Kristine Schomaker, Curator

Shoebox Arts invites you to submit work for this Southern California based open call exhibition at Shoebox Projects in Los Angeles, our alternative art space supports artists through curator opportunities, residencies, representation and exhibitions. This in-person exhibition runs February 5 to February 25, 2024

Artwork can be any 2D or 3D media (drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, etc.)  but should address the "Bloom" theme.  Sculptures must include a pedestal.

All work should be ready for installation/hanging (no sawtooth hangers) Work(s) must be able to be dropped off and picked up at the designated times; we can not accept work through USPS. AND we don’t have space to store work.

60/40 split with 60% to the artist. All work sold through the gallery. Artist responsible for delivery or collector will pay for shipping.

KRISTINE SCHOMAKER (she/her) is an Art Historian, Curator, Publisher, Art Manager and multidisciplinary artist living and working at the Brewery artist complex in Los Angeles, California. She earned her BA in Art History and MA in Studio Art from California State University at Northridge where she studied under Betty Ann Brown and Samantha Fields. In 2014 Kristine founded Shoebox PR aimed at helping artists gain a presence in the art world.


Kristine started an open critique meet-up that takes place every 2-3 months, runs an alternative art space, Shoebox Projects at the Brewery and is an Art Activator for the organization Artists Thrive. She founded the Facebook groups: Artists Trading Co and Artist Classifieds, created a researched subscription program for calls-for-art for artists, started a free peer mentorship program and Call and Response: Collaboration at a Distance during the pandemic.


Kristine is also the publisher of Art and Cake a contemporary L.A. Art magazine reviewing shows, interviewing art influencers and covering art world events that will impact how the Los Angeles art scene will be remembered. Kristine has taught art history at Antelope Valley College and Pasadena City College, formed an artist collective in Los Angeles and has organized and curated numerous art exhibitions throughout Southern California. She served as president of the California State University Northridge Arts Alumni Association.


Her mission is to create community among artists and the art world in order to help each other thrive. Through social practice and engagement and influenced by artists such as Kim Abeles, Alexandra Grant, and Samantha Fields as well as past influencers: Peggy Guggenheim and Gertrude Stein, Kristine is interested in using art and community, education and expression to cultivate change.


Shoebox Projects is an Alternative Art Space that opened in November of 2016 as a platform for Artists to use the physical space to experiment and create new work through residencies. We have group shows, performances, residencies, artist talks and online exhibitions. 


Shoebox Arts is an arts organization focused on supporting and empowering artists, building community, offering peer mentorship, PR/marketing strategies and social media management. Shoebox Projects is our alternative art space that supports artists through curator opportunities, residencies and representation.

Application Requirements

Artists may submit 3 images for consideration for a non-refundable $30 submission fee. Up to 7 additional pieces (for a total of 10) may be presented for an additional $5 ea.  

Note: this system requires a minimum of 3 images.  If you wish to submit only one, upload 2 blank place holders OR feel free to add 2 detail images. Title them accordingly- Blank 1; or Detail 1 etc 

Eligibility Criteria

Fees must be paid at time of submission via cafe.org.
Open to Artists residing in Southern California, age 18 and older. Artists must be able to drop off and pick up their work at the Brewery Arts Complex in Los Angeles.

All fine arts visual media will be considered. 
2D: maximum size is 48"x48"
3D: maximum size is 30"W x 30"D x 60"H
