TAG Gallery Celebrates Art, Excellence, and Creativity in Watercolor Painting

JURORS: Sally Lamb and Shelley Lazarus

Sally Lamb is known for her highly detailed, light-filled Southern California landscapes. She is one of six founding members of The Artists Gallery (TAG), serving the collective as both historian and president throughout the years. The artist holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Southern California (USC). She’s taught watercolor painting for 45 years, 15 years at the Brentwood Art Center in Los Angeles. She’s also instructed numerous private students. Lamb was born and raised in Santa Monica. The popular beach city is frequently the subject of her paintings.

The painter has been granted many awards, including the Aimee Bourdieu Award for Watercolor from Women’s Painters West. This award was juried by the influential sculptor and painter, Claire Falkenstein.

Lamb’s work has been included at major museums and galleries throughout Southern California. Her record of solo exhibitions and group shows is extensive. Career highlights include showings with Ryman Arts. Notable gallery representation includes showing paintings in Santa Monica and Palm Springs with the Terrance Rogers/Terry Martin Gallery, representation at Schomberg Gallery and at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. Lamb’s paintings are included in many private and public collections including St. John’s Hospital, Payden & Rygel, Habitat for Humanity, Le Senora Institute and the Green on 19 Project are notable institutions that have collected her work.

Sally Lamb has also published a book, Cash Under the Mattress (2011). She additionally produced and co-wrote the feature film, The Painting - The Art of Slaying (2015), directedand co-written by Robert D. Rothbard. Lamb and Rothbard’s film won theIFS Award at the Independent Filmmakers Showcase in 2015.

Shelley Lazarus’ main goal as an artist is to bring a sense of movement and emotion to her paintings via the use of color. Her landscapes are painted mostly on location, where through composition and the movement of space, she is not only able to capture the subtle nuances reflected in the light but allows herself to feel the power of the atmosphere around her. Each new painting whether it be a plein-air landscape, a still life created in the comfort of her studio or working from models, is an exciting journey into a world that she can create and alter to express her own visions.

Shelley was born and educated in New York, beginning her art studies at Pratt College while still attending Lincoln High School. She later studied at Syracuse University and Parsons School of Design. In 1973 she relocated to the Los Angeles area with her husband and their three sons. Although her art career was interrupted for a time, in 1981 she became involved with the Brentwood Art Center

She has been actively pursuing her art career since that time. Her works have been shown annually in both local and national shows. Her work has garnered numerous awards including the International Art Competition for the Olympics in 1984, first place from the San Fernando Valley Art Club for a watercolor in the Santa Monica Mountain Celebration, and the recent Oklahoma National Watercolor investment award. She is a member of the Watercolor Honor Society and a signature member of the Oklahoma National Watercolor Society.

Her paintings are in the collections of both private, corporate, and public sectors here and abroad including the library at Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She is an active participant in Women Painters WestValley Watercolor SocietyGallery 825 and Valley Institute of Visual Arts (VIVA).

Shelley has taught art to both children and adults. At the present time she is teaching advanced watercolor painting studies to adults at the Brentwood Art Center. She also teaches plein-air painting during the summer months and has given private lessons to those in the entertainment industry as well as to royalty.

In 1993 she became involved in the formation of TAG Gallery a co-op gallery located in the Miracle Mile Museum Row district on Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA. In 2000 she served as TAG President and has been on their board almost since its inception.

The Shelley Lazarus Excellence in Watercolor Award Exhibition call for art is open to artists 18 years and older residing in the United States painting with the watercolor medium.
