Our Call For Entry Exhibition in 2024 is “Put A Lid On It”, guest juried by Doug Peltzman and Jen Allen. This Second Annual Functional Fall Exhibition at Clay Art Center presents lidded ceramics and encourages submissions from artists at all stages of their careers.

Our guest jurors state, “This exhibition of lidded ceramics spotlights the concept of containment with the intent to hold, store, commemorate, memorialize, and celebrate. The lidded pot spans millennia. From the physical need of preserving food to the spiritual need for ceremonial objects, the lidded pot is - and always has been - essential to survival. Contemporary makers continue to explore this realm of object-making in exciting and unpredictable ways. This exhibition hopes to bring together a powerfully diverse grouping of lidded pots that speak to our times in addition to our histories.”

Guest Jurors

Guest Juror Doug Peltzman is based in Shokan, NY. He states, “My work is an act of love. I love the challenge of making functional pottery for daily use. Every aspect of the process is an opportunity to dig deep. I believe pots can be a powerful conduit for conversation, interaction, and celebration. I approach my forms with comfort, curiosity, playfulness, geometry, history, and intention of use, in mind. My surfaces are a careful arrangement of glaze color, idiosyncratic marks, leaf motifs, horizon lines, circles, and grids. I use these signifiers to emphasize my formal decisions and to shift perceptions about what pottery can be; a profound mechanism to induce pause and delight in the day to day.”

Guest Juror Jen Allen is based in Morgantown, WV. She states, “My focus is to express sentiments of beauty and joy through tactile, handmade pots. Whether forming a vase that decorates a room or producing dinnerware that celebrates a meal, my work is made to honor and enhance the rhythms of home life. Driven to create for special occasions, I visualize the holiday table brimming with friends, food, flowers, and candlelight. While I enjoy the vibrant energy encircling a festive gathering, I find the contemplative moments sipping a morning cup of coffee equally as invigorating. My work is intended to live in these instances of physical and psychological nourishment.”
