Call Description

Public Art Project Description

The City of Coral Springs will commission an artist for a mural at the Center for the Arts, a city facility that provides entertainment, events, education, and arts and culture. The approximate dimensions of the building wall are 75’4’’ (height) by 80’7’’(width). The theme of the mural should incorporate the location and surrounding context with relation to the arts.

The City of Coral Springs Vision is “To be the premier community in which to live, work and raise a family.” The City’s Core Values are Teamwork, Respect, Accountability, Innovation, Leadership, and Superior Service (TRAILS). The theme of the artwork should focus on the City’s Core Values and the location of the mural.

Qualities of Artwork

The mural artwork should be durable and require minimal ongoing maintenance. South Florida has a sub-tropical climate and is hot and humid with intense sun and seasonal heavy rain. Problems with fading should be avoided and, artist must apply UV resistant sealant to the finished product.

Artist Requirements Once Selected  

• Installation of the artwork;

• Dedication/unveiling ceremony;

• One public lecture or program at the Coral Springs Museum of Art.

Tentative Art Project Schedule

• Call to Artists Posted: January 2, 2024

• Artist Applications Due: January 31, 2024

• Artist Selection: February 26, 2024

• Commission Approval: March 2024

• Artwork Installation, no later than: June 2024 

Artwork Purchase Budget

The total purchase budget established for the project is up to $150,000.00. The price includes all insurance, taxes, fees, permits, materials, preparation, equipment, and installation.

Coral Springs, Florida

Coral Springs, Florida is a diverse city located in Broward County in Southeast Florida, approximately 20 miles northwest of Ft. Lauderdale and 10 miles southwest of Boca Raton. Coral Springs was founded in 1963 as “the city in the country.” Today, approximately 134,000 people live in the 24 square miles of suburban Broward County. Coral Springs is 30 minutes away from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and less than 60 minutes from Miami (MIA) and West Palm Beach (PBI) airports. To visit the Sample Road or ArtWalk site, use the Sample Road exit on any of the three major highways: I-95, Florida’s Turnpike or Sawgrass Expressway (State Highway 869). Travel east from the Sawgrass and west from I-95 and Florida’s Turnpike.

Coral Springs Public Art Program

The program was established in 2003 and is funded by public art impact fees from private developers. No tax dollars are used to purchase public art or fund this program. Please review all artwork the city has purchased online and learn about the city at www.coralsprings.gov/publicart.

Application Requirements

Application Process

The application process is managed by the City of Coral Springs. The Coral Springs Public Art Committee serves as the selection committee. Once selected by the Committee, the mural will be heard by the City Commission for final approval.

Selection Criteria

The Public Art Selection Committee shall consider the following issues:

1. Appropriateness of the artwork to the goals of the program;

2. Appropriateness of the artwork to the site and site environmental conditions;

3. Experience and other qualifications of the artist;

4. Quality of the artwork;

5. Location of artist; and

6. Maintenance requirements.

The information and documentation below must be submitted through CAFÉ.

1. Cover Letter: A cover letter listing experience with similar or related projects (PDF)

2. Resume. A current professional resume (PDF)

3. Images of proposed Artwork and materials

4. Purchase price of the artwork (total purchase budget for permanent artwork is up to  $150,000.00)

5. Development of action plan for the project, including timeline

6. Proposal public lecture of program at the Coral Springs Museum of Art

Other Selection Issues

1. Florida “Sunshine Laws”: All meetings of the Committee are open to the public, are publicly advertised and are documented through written minutes.

2. Conflict of Interests: Artists with immediate family or business partners on the selection committee are not eligible to apply. A selection committee member may choose to withdraw from discussion and voting for any apparent conflict of interest.

3. Public Art Committee Contacts: Artist applicants should not contact Public Art Committee members between the release of the Call to Artists and the completion of the selection process. Contact the City of Coral Springs for all questions and information.

Eligibility Criteria

Artist Eligibility

The project is open to any professional visual artist with experience implementing their ideas and work in the public realm. Artist or Professional Artist means a practitioner in the visual arts, generally recognized by critics and peers as a professional of serious intent and ability. Indications of a person’s status as a professional artist include, but are not limited to, income realized through the sole commission of artwork, frequent or consistent art exhibitions, placement of artwork in public institutions or museums, receipt of honors and awards, and training in the arts.

Artists are NOT eligible who are immediate family or business partners of members of the Public Art Committee, the selection committee or program staff.
