JUROR:

Jo Williams, https://www.jowilliamswatercolors.com

“Art in all its manifestations gives meaning to our lives, and it is an essential part of our culture. We are so fortunate to live in a time when there is a rich abundance of materials from which to select for making art, and there are so many masterful artists willing to share their knowledge.

It takes courage to create art, and it takes even more courage to share our art with others. I applaud all artists who submit work for juried competitions. Rejection always hurts, but we should all remember that jurors make their selections based on many reasons. When I am rejected, I will look at the work that was selected and then examine my work with a critical eye and consider what I can learn from the rejection, and I often will simply enter the work in another competition with a different juror.

As a juror and teacher, it is an absolute joy to view other artist’s work; it is simply like Christmas morning!  It is especially wonderful to see work with a surprising subject matter or with a familiar subject, but that is presented in a way that surprises me. Many of us are drawn to similar subject matter.  My criteria for jurying work is pretty universal: l. Emotional impact; 2. Design and composition; 3. Technical competence.

I am honored to be the juror for the Richardson Civic Art Society 58th Annual Regional Exhibition, and I look forward to seeing your submissions.”
