Call Description

Current art and media students from Southern California colleges and universities are invited to submit engaging new work to be showcased in Palos Verdes Art Center’s 8th Annual Alpay Scholarship ExhibitionNow Trending. One $5000 cash prize will be awarded. In addition, the scholarship winner will be considered for inclusion in future PVAC exhibitions. This call is open only to currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students in Southern California. 

All media will be considered, including but not limited to: Painting, Drawing, Printing, Sculpture, Glass, Ceramics, Fiber Art, Photography, Video, Film, VR (virtual reality), AR (augmented reality), Installation Art, Performance Art, and Mixed Media.

JUROR: Lawrence Yun

Yun is a Los Angeles artist and a Professor of Art at CSU-Fullerton. He has exhibited in galleries and museums throughout California, including Santa Monica Bergamot Station’s Schomburg Gallery, Patricia Correia Gallery, and Sarah Lee Art Works/Projects as well as Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, and Los Angeles International Airport. Yun’s works are represented in various private and public permanent collections, including Sony Pictures, The Franklin Mint, and Terranea Resort. Additionally, his work can be seen in television programs, including Luck (HBO), The Guardian (CBS), and Knight Rider 2008 (NBC); and movies, including Meet the Fockers (Universal Pictures), Daddy Day Care (Columbia Pictures), and Transformers (DreamWorks).

Submission Procedure:

  • Go to www.callforentry.org
  • Create a CaFE profile.
  • Follow step-by-step instructions in CaFE for creating a profile. Please be sure to identify your media and substrate, i.e. oil on canvas, digital on copper, etc.
  • File Type: JPEG or JPG only.
  • File Dimensions: 1,200 pixels or greater on the longest side.
  • File Size: Under 5 MB.
  • Color Profile: sRGB
  • Apply to call, Now Trending: : 8th Annual Alpay Scholarship Exhibition. You may submit up to 3 pieces of art once your profile in CaFE is complete.
  • Artists may submit 3 images, one for each piece of art that you enter.
  • All work must be original to the artist and the source material must be original to the artist or from a permitted source.
  • Applicants must enter college or university affiliation and short statement about their work or practice, and what they would do with scholarship prize if awarded

                                                                                                         Selection Process:

  • Juror selections will be announced by CaFE via email by May 8, 2024.
  • Artwork take-in days: May 31 & June 1, 10am - 4pm
  • 2024 Alpay Award recipient to be announced at the opening reception, June 8, 2024, 6 - 9pm at Palos Verdes Art Center, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.
  • This exhibition will be exhibited in the Main and Walker galleries on the campus of Palos Verdes Art Center, June 8 - July 6, 2024, 5504 Crestridge Road,  Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, 90275.

Application Requirements

Requirement for Entry: Applicant must be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student in a college or university located only in Southern California. All entries must be accompanied by name of artist's affiliated school.  Entrants must also detail how they would spend the scholarship, if they receive the award.  Entries without the above information will be disqualified.

Eligibility Criteria

Only artists currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a college or university located exclusively in Southern California may participate in Now Trending.
