2024 Stuart Artist-in-Residence
School of Design
South Dakota State University
Brookings, South Dakota
https://www.sdstate.edu/school-design/stuart-artist-residence

Residency Term: September 3–28, 2024

Honorarium: $2,500
Materials Stipend: $200

Applications for 4-week artist-in-residence are now being accepted from visual artists working in any discipline, including interdisciplinary approaches. The committee encourages artists to create and develop artwork independently in the Ritz Gallery. Artists should be willing to discuss their project conceptualization and visual progression with School of Design students, faculty, and the community during open studio hours and public events. It is not intended that the selected artist teach or provide workshops.

Given South Dakota State University’s commitment to “extend the reach and depth of the University by developing strategic programs and collaborations”, the residency selection committee especially encourages applications from artists who are currently residing and working outside and beyond the South Dakota region.

Residency Provides: During the residency the artist will be provided 24/7 access to our Ritz Gallery, a 1,200 sq. ft. lockable studio space that normally functions as a teaching gallery. The resident studio is located on campus within an academic environment. The resident artist will be provided with a private, furnished, and equipped apartment within walking distance from the studio. Please note that campus housing requires a background check. A bike and lock will be provided for the resident to use during their stay. Use of university equipment and space within teaching studios is limited. Therefore, applicants should list specific studio furniture and basic equipment needs in their project intent statement.

Residency Requirements: The resident artist is expected to maintain a full-time working schedule that includes an open-door policy, based studio art course scheduling to share the development of their project with students, faculty, and the regional arts community. The artist will also be required to give a public lecture on their artwork. The residency will culminate with an open studio event and/or exhibition featuring the residency project in the School of Design Ritz Gallery.

The resident is expected to hold a minimum of 8 open studio hours per week and should expect to be asked to visit School of Design class critiques, engage with the South Dakota Art Museum, or participate in brief local interviews as part of the residency to promote their work and the program. Open studio hours are a critical component to the unique educational aspect of this residency, providing an opportunity for students and our community to learn about the artist and their practice, and how their project evolves over the course of the month. This mutual exchange is an important element of the Stuarts’ vision for establishing a residency on a campus situated within a rural environment.

The resident artist will also be the keynote speaker for the 2024 South Dakota Art Education Association / South Dakota College Arts Conference on Friday, Sept. 27th. This event will be held on campus and the resident artist will receive an additional stipend in support for the keynote address.

Artist Responsibilities: Transportation, shipping, materials, supplies, meals, and personal expenses.

Application Process: Submit application through www.callforentry.org
Include: Residency project intent statement (one page limit) and resume (not exceeding three pages) in PDF format, 3 professional references, and 10 images of completed artwork and/or images relevant to statement of project intent. Residency project intent statement should include applicant’s 4-week plan to develop/produce artwork independently. For audio and/or video, please provide web-link information within resume.  Application process closes on March 29, 2024 at 11:59pm, Mountain Time Zone (Denver, CO, USA).

History of Residency: The Stuart Artist-in-Residence program is funded through a donation from Joe and Signe Stuart, artists who worked and taught in Brookings for several decades. Signe Stuart (b. 1937) was a professor of art at South Dakota State University from 1972–1994, and Joe Stuart (1932–2016) served as director and curator at the South Dakota Art Museum from 1971–1993. Together they initiated the development of an artist-in-residence program on the South Dakota State University campus to enrich our community and create opportunities for artists. Past Stuart resident artists include Mayumi Amada, Jessica Campbell, Duy Hoàng, Ali Hval, Lori Larusso, Tanner Lind, Paige Mostowy, Neal Rock, and Izel Vargas.
