Artist in Residence Program

This program joins visual artists with the wonder and unexpected opportunities in Wyoming State Parks.  This is a 10 day road trip residency in August 2024 where artists will have a choice of itinerary that includes visiting a minimum of 4 state parks where you can be inspired by the beauty of the state. Camping is required, no gear will be provided although cabins, yurts and dorm housing will be offered. This is a joint program through Wyoming State Parks and the Wyoming Arts Council.

Application Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Must be able to travel to a minimum of 4 state parks over the course of 10 days in August, 2024,
    • Create a daily State Parks blog post with photos to be posted on the Wyoming State Parks website.
    • Daily social media posts of travel and artwork (Facebook, Instagram) that can be posted at Wyoming State Parks and individual parks pages as well as personal pages. All social media posts MUST be from inside Wyoming State Parks and follow brand standards.
    • With the support of Wyoming State Parks and Cultural Resources, the artist will be required to produce a community service component either in conjunction with the residency or within two months of commencement.
    • 75% of the work must be created within the confines of Wyoming State Parks.
  • Artists must create a minimum of 10 pieces inspired by their experience for the Artist in Residence Show and Sale, hosted at the Wyoming State Museum, November - January each year.
    • Works must be limited to 4 pieces no longer than 60" and all other works being below 20". Depending on final sizes and number of works produced, not all pieces may be included in the final show and sale due to space constraints.
    • A 25% commission will be collected and given to Wyoming State Parks and Cultural Resources.
    • All information including titles, dimensions, pricing, or other exhibition needs must be delivered to the Wyoming State Museum two weeks before the show's opening date.
  • Artist agrees to respect public lands and historic structures by following the use regulations and any verbal, written or posted rules of the various land management agencies (i.e. obtaining necessary use permits, staying on designated roads and trails, etc.).
  • Valid driver’s license, a personal vehicle and auto insurance in the amount of $500,000 minimum limits.  Artists MUST be 18 years of age or older.
  • A contract with the state of Wyoming is required.
  • Sign an agreement stating that the Artist will comply with rules and regulations of Wyoming State Parks and the Artist in Residence Program.

Eligibility Criteria

ELIGIBILITY: Artists must be a year-round resident of Wyoming and at least 18 years of age. The Wyoming State Parks Artist in Residence program is open to visual artists.  Both established and emerging artists of promise are welcome to apply. You must be willing to travel and camp in our wonderful Wyoming State Parks.  

SELECTION: Residents are chosen at minimum by a representative of Wyoming State Parks, Wyoming Arts Council, and a former Artist in Residence.

NOTIFICATION: Notifications will be made by mid-May. The successful artist will then meet with the State Parks and Cultural Resources team to plan their adventure.  

REAPPLICATION: Artists who have applied for the program but who have been unsuccessful will have to reapply each year. 

DONATION: The selected artist will donate a mutually agreed upon piece of original work, representative of their stay in Wyoming State Parks, within one year of completion of the residency. The artwork is donated to the agency.  The agency may offer the piece for consideration in: the park's permanent museum collection, the Capital Arts Collection within the Wyoming State Museum, or sell it to raise funds supporting the Artist-in-Residence Program or other park needs.

COPYRIGHT: The artist shall retain copyright of the artwork but agrees to grant the State of Wyoming and State Parks and Cultural Resources a non-exclusive, limited, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, free of all charges, transferable license to use images of the artwork, as outlined in this contract, for promotional and non-sales purposes. The artist may make use of the artwork for personal and professional promotion using the language, "Produced under the Artist-in-Residence Program at Wyoming State Parks."

STIPEND:  Camping and Day Use fees are waived for the 10 days an artist will be in State Parks. Stipend is $3500.00. Half is payable prior to the trip and half is payable upon completion of the 10 day trip.  

ARTISTS MUST SUBMIT ON CAFE TO BE CONSIDERED:

  • * A Resume and an Artist's Statement
  • * Statement of Purpose: What do you hope to gain through time spent at Wyoming State Parks? How might you share your insight, experience and creative contribution with park visitors and people of the local community?
  • *Three choices of beginning / ending dates for your stay. Residencies are 10 days anytime in August.
  • *Submit up to six digital images. Include title and medium.
