Eligibility: This project is open to professional artists and artist teams.

 

 

Theme: The Fusion of Monumentality and Technology 

The Steel District in partnership with The Washington Pavilion located in Sioux Falls, SD requests qualifications from experienced and innovative artists and/or artist teams interested in creating a site-specific, monumental sculpture that seamlessly integrates technology. This unique public art installation will enhance the landscaping in a vehicle roundabout, serving as a dynamic focal point for both residents and visitors in a brand new development in Sioux Falls, SD.

 

Project Overview: 

·        Location: Landscaping roundabout at The Steel District in Sioux Falls, SD. 

·        Timeline: 10-month manufacturing period from June 2024 – April 2025 

·        Budget: $400,000.00 (inclusive of all costs associated with design, fabrication, transportation, and installation.) 

·        Mission Statement for Project: To promote art experiences for all that encourage innovation and critical thinking while celebrating the Sioux Falls community. 

 

Theme and Guidelines: 

We seek qualifications from artists and/or artist teams capable of creating a monumental sculpture that explores the intersection of tradition and technology. The artwork should embody a sense of grandeur while incorporating innovative technological elements. The chosen artist will have the chance to shape this landmark location's visual identity. 

 

Key Considerations: 

1.      Integration of Technology: The sculpture must incorporate technological elements that enhance its visual impact and engage viewers. 

2.      Durability: Given the outdoor placement, the artwork should be designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and require minimal maintenance. 

3.      Reflecting Sioux Falls: Consider incorporating elements that reflect the culture, history, or spirit of Sioux Falls. 

 

 

Selection Criteria: 

·        Artistic merit and innovation. 

·        Integration of technology. 

·        Feasibility within the budget and timeline. 

·        Compatibility with The Steel Districts surroundings. 

 

Award: 

The selected artist will be awarded a commission of $400,000 to cover all aspects of the project.

May 3 – June 24th, 2024 - Design Time and Site Visit for Finalists

June 25th, 2024 - Final Proposals Due

June 26th, 2024 - Final Artist Selected

July 2024 – April 2025 - Design and Artwork creation

May 20th, 2025 - Delivery and Installation

 

 

Qualifications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated ability to create original, durable works of art that are engaging, evoke integration of technology and durability.
  • Work samples should demonstrate the style of work the artists or artist teams will propose for this project, their level of workmanship, and excellence in use of materials (please do not submit conceptual renderings, only projects that have been built).
  • Responsiveness to the goals of the project as described in the Statement of Interest.
  • Artistic merit, innovation, originality and creativity expressed in examples of past projects.
  • Professional experience working on projects of similar scale, budget, and technical design.
  • Ability to undertake the design, creation and installation within the timeline.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with stakeholders and community groups.
