PROGRAM DESCRIPTION This outdoor artwork will be highly visible and must compliment the City’s aesthetic in style, scale, and medium. Artists’ are encouraged to use all types of materials for this project including but not limited to: stone, metal, wood, found items, etc. The artwork will serve as a gateway to the community of Valencia and the Industrial Center, and will be visible to motorists as they travel on Newhall Ranch Road. PROJECT THEME The art work should feature a contemporary industrial theme. The piece could consider the history and growth of various industries in the Santa Clarita Valley including aerospace, bio medical, agriculture, oil, etc. PROJECT GOALS The following project goals will help guide the selection of the commissioned artwork: 1. Artwork is of an original, site-specific design. 2. Artwork is fabricated in a durable, low maintenance material that will withstand the heat and other elements of Santa Clarita. 3. Artwork is complementary to the overall context of the surrounding area. 4. Artwork has strong public appeal and will be embraced by the local community. BACKGROUND The City of Santa Clarita recently completed the first median art project located on Bouquet Canyon Road outside of Central Park. With the success of this project, funding has been identified to create a second median art piece to be located on Newhall Ranch Road, near the entry to the City from the west, adjacent to Vanderbilt Way. BUDGET: A budget of $15,000.00 must cover all associated costs of the project, including but not limited to, design, fabrication, materials, labor, transportation, insurance, consulting fees (such as structural engineering or testing), installation, permit fees, per diem, and taxes for both pieces. It is the responsibility of the artist to purchase all the art materials necessary to complete the project. ELIGIBILITY The project is open to all artists, age 18 and over, regardless of race, color, religion, natural origin, gender, age, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical or mental disability. TIME LINE: April 10, 2013 Deadline to submit materials to the Arts and Events Office April 2013 Santa Clarita Arts Commission meets to select 3 artists’ for the proposal phase. Each artist will receive a stipend of $200 for this phase of the project. June 2013 Selected Artists’ must present their project design for consideration to the Arts Commission and community at a Public Meeting on the project. In order to receive the stipend/honorarium, the finalists will be required to present and submit a detailed conceptual design proposal that includes the following: • To-scale renderings of the proposed artistic enhancement, location, and orientation • A written description and/or sample of the materials to be used and written substantiation of their appropriateness • A timeline for the design, fabrication, and installation • A written budget for all project costs (not to exceed) • A brief written narrative describing the concept, theme, and intent of the proposal June 2013 Artist or Artists’ are selected by the Arts Commission for the project. June 2013 Artist Agreement sent to the winning artist(s). July 2013 Agreement returned to Arts and Events Office. October 2013 Completed artwork installed on Newhall Ranch Rd. Median. The City of Santa Clarita Arts and Events Office and Santa Clarita Arts Commission reserve the right to change the project timeline.
