The HYARTS PROGRAMMING ANNEX is nestled among museums and arts organizations, a public library, a shared art wall, green space, vibrant businesses, a lively main street, and education partners. It’s all within walking distance of the harbor in downtown Hyannis. This community arts space offers arts education, salon performances, artist dwell spaces, and a glass studio and workshop.

As an artist in residence, you will have access to private living space, studio space, gallery space, and support to create and showcase your work, as well as opportunities to connect with other artists and educators in the area. Studios Facilities:

The historic home was constructed in 1830 as a residential home and has a rich history as a gathering place for local artists, playwrights, and poets who congregated at the home for lively readings. Nautical-themed original Vernon Coleman murals decorate the basement walls.  In 2007, the Town of Barnstable purchased the property and completed extensive renovations, turning it into gallery and studio space.

Community Engagement Component

The arts educator in residence is required to teach summer classes for 24 hours each week during the weeks of July 8, 15, 22, 29. This is a paid stipend of $600 per week.

In addition, they are expected to give public demonstrations to showcase their skills and expertise in the field of arts. There are many activities are programmed June through October in the downtown Hyannis Cultural District, providing an unparalleled opportunity for residents to engage with the public at the Studios and anywhere on the artwork downtown, opening up limitless ideas for interactive art projects. 

Artists are required to host open studios one (1) day a week:

We encourage artists to involve the downtown community in their project(s). The front exhibition area, where the studio is located, is open to the public on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 10–12 pm. This gives the artist a unique opportunity to interact and share with the public.

Application Requirements

Visual and Literary Artists - 6 work samples 

– additional works will be reviewed if provided as link to url (online portfolio, published works, etc.)

Video/performance - 3 work samples

CV/Resume

– should reflect your artistic/creative accomplishments

– 1 professional reference, who can speak about your work and 

– 1 personal reference, who can speak about you personally, your work ethic, values, and any other pertinent information about you.

– provide names and contact; phone/email of these individuals (letters not required).

– finalists’ references will be contacted by selection committee to speak about you.

Eligibility Criteria

The residencies are open to all artists, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, or physical or mental disability.

To qualify for the Arts Educator in Residence program, candidates must have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Fine Arts, Education, or a related field. They must also possess a minimum of 2 years of experience in teaching or working in an arts education program. Additionally, candidates should have a strong understanding of the principles and practices of arts education, as well as the ability to design and implement engaging and effective arts curriculum. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are also essential, as the Arts Educator in Residence will be required to interact with students, parents, and community members. Finally, candidates should be passionate about the arts and committed to fostering creativity and self-expression in young people.
