  ABOUT THE JUROR

James R. Spurlock painted and sculpted his way to a very fulfilling niche for himself in the art world. As an artist for over 47 years in over 12 medias, Spurlock loves to pass on his experience in art to many seminar and private students across the country. As a bronze sculptor for over 30 years, he has not limited himself to just memorial busts but continues to sculpt life size bronzes that portray what life means to him and the clients that he 'speaks' for. His Motto … such is an artist's passion.  Color, value, drawing and edges,..."art is just a series of adjustments...and Life is Art."

Over the years, he has produced more than 120 portraits for both the Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas police departments. “When someone passes, they leave a hole.... (Maybe) an icon, an artistic representation of the missing person (will) help start healing the void,” he said. This is especially true for those officers who are killed in the line of duty. In addition to the police portraits, Spurlock has been doing memorial artwork for private clients since his early days as a professional in the 1970s, using a variety of media to achieve the task. Today, about 40% of his work is commissions for memorials. It's important work, something of a calling, he states. “The family or memorial portraits can be the spark to help a family find strength or regain strength after a tragic occurrence,” he said.

Among his many blessings, Spurlock comes from a family of artisans and a rich cultural heritage.  With a Japanese mother and a US Air Force father, Spurlock was the firstborn and got the benefit of the many years in Japan, learning to speak the language and soaking up the art and history of the place.  Military life can be isolating but Spurlock found that it led him to be more flexible and develop an objective outlook.  “I had two dichotomous roots,” he said, contemplating his upbringing--Japan and the military--and he simply learned to bloom where he was planted.

Spurlock is a humble man, who has been honored with may awards throughout his career as an artist, but when he looks back his most memorable and in his eyes most prestigious one was when the artists voted amongst themselves for the Best in Show of the artists attending the Midwest Gathering of Artists Show, where he has been fortunate to win it three times.

Spurlock has a long repertoire of commissioned artworks, some already mentioned, just to name a few more are:  George Washington at Valley Forge by U.S. Congressman Roger Williams; CBS Radio News and Jody Dean to paint Jerry Jones portrait; and to paint Judge Ralph Walton for the new Walton Justice Wing in Granbury.

Spurlock has a wealth of experience judging shows throughout Texas, and is looking forward and honored to have been selected to Judge The Fall Show 2024.
