Fibrous is a juried exhibition of paper and textile artworks from across the country. What do paper and textiles have in common? FIBERS! The processes of creating both paper and textiles are very different - pulp and various fibers are pressed into sheets to create different paper types, while textiles are created by weaving or knitting the fibers together to create a flexible and durable finished product.

This exhibition is meant to highlight the unique properties and artistic creations that can be derived from these two fiber mediums.

This exhibition is open to all functional, non-functional, 2D, 3D, fine art, and fine craft in ALL STYLES. Artwork must consist of either paper or textile/fiber material and/or components in 80% of its composition to qualify for this show. Both natural and synthetic fiber materials qualify.

Work must be hang, or pedestal ready. Work may be no longer than 60” in its longest dimension, and weigh no more than 50 pounds. If you have a question about if your work qualifies, please email abradley@d-artcenter.org

If your work is selected for the show, please be sure to read the full Limitations and Artwork Specifications section before shipping or hand delivering work.

$35 for 3 submissions, one image per artwork submission

*** Size and weight restrictions may be waived by contacting the Gallery Director directly prior to submission. If you have a question about if your work qualifies, please email abradley@d-artcenter.org.

This is an in person exhibition but this exhibition will also be featured digitally on d’Art Center’s archive site. See our profile here.

Exhibition co-curated by d'Art Center Gallery Director, Amanda Bradley, and Artist & Exhibition Juror, Maggie Kerrigan.

Juror: Maggie Kerrigan considers altered books to be a method of eliciting a further message from the printed page, augmenting the initial narrative created by the author. Adding an artistic twist to the physical form of the book allows her to merge her own impressions and message with that of the author. This provides the viewer with an added dimension to consider regarding the original literary work.

Originally a trained watercolorist, Kerrigan began altering books after seeing the works by an anonymous artist in Scotland. With very few people working in this medium, she broke new ground, experimenting with a variety of techniques, and honing her methods to get the desired results.  As a result, Kerrigan developed a unique process for carving books that no other artist has replicated. She’s very proud of being a pioneer in this art form.

“Most of my books are obtained from charity shops and are at their last stop before the landfill. I rescue them, transform them, and turn them into treasures to be appreciated.”

Kerrigan exhibits in local, regional and national shows and has won several awards.  She teaches both painting and altering books, along with  business skills and coaching for artists.  She is heavily involved in the Virginia Beach Art Center and her local artist community.

After years of living abroad, Kerrigan now creates in her studio in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  Her early career as an elementary school teacher took her to live in Germany and then Iceland.  Then her husband’s Naval career took them to Hawaii and London.  The experiences of living and traveling abroad for so many years gave Kerrigan a unique perspective and outlook on life that informs her art.

Kerrigan is largely self-taught, guided by her curious mind and experimental nature.  Her art education began in the community college system of Koln, Germany and continued with art courses in each new location of her frequent moves, including Honolulu and London.  She enjoys learning new techniques in paper manipulation during short and long workshops throughout the eastern US.  She also enjoys teaching others.

“I happily create artworks on commission.  If You can dream it, I can make it!”

Center Information:

d’Art Center Brief DescriptionOur building is located in Norfolk, Virginia, and is comprised of three galleries, resident artist studios, and multiple activity rooms. The d'Art Center's Main Gallery and Vault are rotated monthly with new and nationally curated exhibitions, while our Artist Wing displays our frequently updated 30+ community artists' work. There is always something new to admire during your visit to d'Art Center!
d’Art Center’s Main Galleryd’Art Center’s Main Gallery is located within The Center at 740 Boush St. Norfolk Virginia, in the heart of the NEON District; Norfolk’s Art District. d’Art’s 2,200sqft gallery has incredible visibility to Boush Street traffic and pedestrians due to its massive street side window facade. The gallery is also amongst a thriving new apartment community of over 400 new apartments and more than 1,000 residents.
d’Art Center HistoryAs Norfolk’s community art center, The d’Art Center proudly serves the greater Hampton Roads area by connecting the community with the visual arts. A non-profit 501c (3) organization, d’Art offers both youth and adult art education and classes, exhibits that give the public a broader exposure to many local and national artists, programming and outreach through art in public spaces, and events to showcase local artists, ceramicists, sculptors, fiber artists, and woodworkers.

Celebrating thirty five years in 2021, d’Art was founded in 1986 at the College Place location in downtown Norfolk. Modeled after the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia, part of d’Art’s mission from the onset was to provide working artists with affordable, short-term studio space. In 2005, the d’Art Center relocated to the historic Selden Arcade, continuing a legacy as a vibrant arts organization. The d’Art Center remained at the Selden Arcade for the next ten years.  After an explosion caused major damage to the d’Art Center at the Selden Arcade, the d’Art Center organization recovered, regrouped, and revived itself in the New Energy of Norfolk (NEON) Arts District at its Duke Grace Building location. In 2021, d’Art Center moved into its forever home in the NEON District: The Atlantic Permanent Building.

The NEON District is anchored by the Chrysler Museum of Art, Harrison Opera House, and The d’Art Center, and extends to The Plot on Granby Street. The NEON District includes many creative small businesses and arts partners.
The VaultThis one hundred and thirty two square foot exhibition space is a historical bank vault within the center, and gives artists an opportunity to exhibit their work in a unique space in the heart of Norfolk Arts District (The NEON District). All styles and aesthetics are considered.
