Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) is an independent, non-partisan, global nonprofit organization working to accelerate the clean energy transition and improve lives (see more below). RMI is seeking Artwork submissions from adult visual artists around the world to enhance our annual report and communications. We will select up to ten Artworks that evoke our work, mission, and values to be published in our annual report, which is distributed both in print and digital formats to global donors, businesses, and government leaders. RMI will NOT be purchasing the selected Artworks but will be paying the artist for the rights to utilize images of their Artwork in RMI's annual report and marketing and communications. For more details on the call, including stipends, deadlines, requirements, and guidance, please review all sections of this call carefully.

ABOUT THE CALL FOR ARTWORK:

RMI ("Organizer") is excited to extend this call to adult visual artists across the globe who create original artwork in 2- and 3-dimensional media. RMI will NOT be purchasing the selected Artworks but will be paying the artist for the rights to utilize images of their Artwork in RMI's annual report and marketing and communications.  

Accepted media: painting, drawing, printmaking, illustration, fine art photography, digital arts, sculpture, metalsmithing, installation, assemblage, glass art, paper art, book art, land art, wood art, fiber art, textile art, collage, mixed media are accepted.  

Media NOT accepted: AI-generated, sound, video, animated or performance artwork.

Both abstract and representational Artwork will be accepted.

Artists Benefits: Artists whose Artwork is selected to be in RMI’s annual report can expect:

  • There is no submission fee for this Opportunity, however a tax-deductible donation may be made to support RMI at https://info.rmi.org/give. Please note that the selection panel will not be advised as to who donated and who did not.
  • A stipend for selected Artwork will be paid based on placement in the publication:
    • Front Cover (1 selected):  $3,000 (USD)
    • Back cover (up to 1 selected): $1,000 (USD)
    • Internal pages (up to 10 selected): $500 (USD) per Artwork
  • A brief description of the Artwork, with artist name, home country, title and media will be included in the annual report publication or on a dedicated page on RMI's website.
  • Artist credit with artist name to be included each time the Artwork is reproduced.
  • Artwork images will be used in other RMI collateral to promote the annual report and associated activities, including social media, email newsletters, presentations, RMI’s websites, and other digital and printed collateral and will include an artist credit.
  • Artworks utilized in other RMI publications and collateral may be cropped or have copy bleed onto the image at the discretion of RMI’s marketing and design teams.
  • To understand the exposure of this Opportunity, RMI’s publications have the following reach:
    • The annual report will be mailed to ~4,000 and emailed to ~80,000.
    • RMI’s annual report web page had 3,779 views in the last 12 months.
    • In 2023, RMI’s total web traffic reached 1,180,313 users and 3.3 Million sessions.
  • Social media posts including an image of the Artwork and a brief description of the Artwork will be posted when the annual report is released.

To keep the work of the jury manageable, we will not accept additional images (or links to additional images) or any additional materials other than what is outlined in the call. Additional materials sent to this email will not be accepted as part of your application. 

Application Requirements

Selection Process:

  • Deadline to submit Artwork: June 30, 2024, 11:59 PM Mountain Daylight time (MDT)
  • Submitted Artwork will be initially reviewed to confirm that it meets the requirements and eligibility of this call.
  • A selection panel of the following individuals will jury the final Artworks:
    • RMI employees from around the world
    • RMI donors
    • Invited artists, gallerists, art collectors and/or other art professionals
  • Artists selected for the publication will be notified no later than July 31, 2024.
  • Artists not selected will be notified via email by August 16, 2024.
  • Selected artists will be required to sign a contract with RMI for the use of their Artwork.

  • Brief description or statement of Artwork, including how it evokes the mission and values of RMI

IMAGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • File Type: JPEG or JPG only
  • File Dimensions: 1,200 pixels or greater on the longest side
  • File Size: under 5 MB
  • Resolution: at least 72 PPI
  • Color Profile: sRGB
  • Images of the submitted Artwork should be of high quality and should be only of the Artwork (do not include frames or backgrounds).
  • Diptychs and triptychs must be photographed and submitted as one image.

Eligibility Criteria

Media NOT accepted: AI-generated, sound, video, animated or performance artwork.

Submitted Artworks should evoke the work, mission, and values of RMI.

In keeping with RMI’s value of Applied Hope, we ask that submissions convey a sense of hope and possibility.

Submitting artists must be of legal, adult age in their home country (typically 18 years or older).

There are no size limits on the Artwork.

Artists may submit up to three original Artworks for consideration. Diptychs and triptychs will be considered one piece of Artwork (please photograph as one image).

Since the artists selected for the publication will retain ownership of their Artwork, submissions need not be new work, although we would prefer work created in the last five years.

The Artwork does not need to be for sale and can be owned by another entity (collector, etc.). However, the artist must have documented rights and authority to publish the Artwork internationally. If owned by an entity other than the artist, the owner of the Artwork will not be given credit.

The Artwork must reproduce well in print and digital media. Artists selected for publication will be asked to provide high resolution images of their Artwork.

All submitted Artwork must be original Artwork of the submitting artist and must not be copies or derivatives based in any way on other copyrighted or published Artworks.

RMI will retain rights to the use of artists’ images selected for publication in materials related to RMI’s work, mission, and values through the run of the annual report (one year from the publication date). RMI does not retain exclusivity for submitted artworks not selected for publication by the selection panel.

Artworks that, in the view of the Organizer, include porn, violence, hatred of any kind, inappropriate and/or offensive content will be disqualified from the selection process.
