Space Messengers: Call for 3D models for Augmented Reality Installation.

STEMarts Lab is seeking artist-created 3D models for a space-themed augmented reality installation that will become part of the traveling Space Messengers [AR] project. Artists will be paid a stipend each time the model is selected for a festival and will be credited accordingly. STEMarts Lab is W.A.G.E. certified.

Six models will be selected and imported into our WebAR platform which will allow festival participants to access the AR experience from any device via a QR Code or direct link.

We are looking for artistic and innovative 3D models of space objects or phenomena, artistic models inspired by scientific theories such as quantum field theory, gravitational waves, etc. or models inspired by interplanetary universe themes. The models must meet the AR criteria listed in the application requirements section.

Space Messengers is a social art, multi-artist installation and international youth exchange exploring the universe through art, science and technology. This participatory installation communicates science concepts and visualizes thought-provoking reflections on the universe, encouraging participants to contemplate their role within it. Space Messengers evolved from an interdisciplinary collaboration among artists, scientists, interdisciplinary experts and youth ambassadors. Together we explore how the arts, humanities, philosophy, astrophysics, particle physics and space technologies can deepen our understanding of the universe and expand our identities as planetary citizens.

Space Messengers serves as a powerful tool to ignite scientific curiosity and wonder, while giving voice to our youth leaders in rural and tribal communities in New Mexico and around the world. It has been presented at ARS Electronica in Linz, Austria, The PASEO Festival in Taos, New Mexico and the Balloon Museum/Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Application Requirements

Each entry must include photos and videos of the 3D model uploaded through the CAFE submission form. In addition, the .GLB file of the 3D model must be emailed to stemartslab@gmail.com.

Winning entries of 3D models will be uploaded to the Space Messengers 8th Wall WebAR platform. Below are tips for optimizing your 3D models. We will assist with optimization as needed for winning entries.

  1. Geometry Optimization for 3D model
    • Final entries must be 3D models in GLB (glTF 2.0 binary) format
    • Optimal Polygon Target: 30,000
    • For further optimization, decimate the model to reduce polygon count.
    • In Blender, apply the Decimate modifier to the model and reduce the Ratio setting to a value under 1
    • Select Apply Modifiers in the export settings
    • Textures need to be PBR compatible for them to appear in AR. PBR=Physically Based Rendering
  2. Entries can also be created in 3d javascript frameworks such as a-frame, three.js, babylon.js, and playcanvas.

Eligibility Criteria

This international call is open to any artist that meets the application goals and criteria. Entries must be:

  • Artistic and innovative interpretations of space objects or phenomena, artistic models inspired by scientific theories such as quantum field theory, gravitational waves, etc. and/or models inspired by interplanetary universe themes.
  • Meet all 3D model/AR criteria
  • Original content created by artist

Artists are not required to have experience with AR creation and the 8th Wall platform. 8th Wall/AR experience is an added bonus and could lead to other collaboration opportunities.

STEMarts works with student as well as professional level artists and pays stipends appropriate to level.

Applicants are encouraged to visit the website, www.stemarts.com, to learn more about the mission and goals of the organization and the Space Messengers project.
