Call Description
Project Details:
Location: Paragon Star Sports Complex, Lee's Summit, Missouri.
Design Style: The troll sculpture should be family-friendly and evoke a sense of whimsy and imagination. It should resonate with the spirit of adventure and playfulness.
Design Inspiration: While drawing from the Fremont Troll's iconic presence, the sculpture should reflect a softer and more approachable demeanor akin to the creatures found in "Where the Wild Things Are."
Construction Involvement: The selected artist will be expected to be actively involved in the construction process, whether through direct participation or supervision as well as be willing to work with volunteer students, community members and construction team members. Travel to Paragon Star will be required for consultation and oversight.
While all proposals will be reviewed, projects under 10’ in height will get the lowest consideration.
Design Stipend: A design stipend of $15,000 will be awarded to the chosen artist upon selection of their proposal with half of the payment at the start of the project. The stipend includes project supervision and oversight, with the second half of the stipend paid upon completion of the project.
Materials and construction costs will not need to be included in the stipend and will be considered separately. (See more about construction budget and materials list in the proposal requirements below)
Timeline: The RFP opens on May 1st, 2024, and closes on July 15th, 2024.
Application Requirements
Proposal Requirements:
- Detailed sketches or renderings illustrating the proposed Troll sculpture design.
- A written description outlining the concept, inspiration, and intended impact of the sculpture.
- Estimated budget breakdown and materials list, including build and installation labor costs, for the construction of the sculpture.
- The call is open to all types of materials including, but not limited to: concrete, wood and metal.
- The final sculpture will be placed outdoors and will need to be able to withstand wind and all seasons weather, please speak to this is the written description.
- Artist's portfolio showcasing relevant previous work and experience.
- Availability and willingness to participate in the construction process at Paragon Star Sports Complex, in Lees Summit, MO, if selected.
Submission Guidelines:
Proposals should be submitted no later than July 15th, 2024 11:59pm. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
Selection Process:
A selection committee composed of representatives from Paragon Star Sports Complex will review all submitted proposals and select the winning design based on creativity, feasibility, adherence to the project requirements, and alignment with the desired aesthetic.
Applicants will be shortlisted based on a competitive review of the following:
- Artistic excellence: demonstrated skill and quality craftsmanship in examples of past work; strength and originality of concept conveyed in the letter of interest.
- Artistic Experience: artists skilled in crafting sculptures that accurately capture the likeness of the subject are preferred.

This opportunity is open nationally to all professional artists and artist teams, though the project advisory panel may have a preference for locally-based artists and artist teams.
