Call Description

The Town of Davie is proud of its equestrian roots and is looking to commission ten (10) Broward County artists for a work for hire project to design and fabricate a painted design on a fiberglass Horse sculpture.  Each artist selected for exhibition will be provided a prefabricated life-size horse sculpture. The selected artists will be provided a dedicated workspace at a Town facility to create the approved artwork. The artists will have thirty (30) days to complete the painting of their sculpture. Each selected artist will be paid $2,000 upon approval, and completion of their painted horse.

Artists may submit up to three designs for consideration. Artists shall use the supplied Thoroughbred Horse template to submit their designs. Please submit all designs in the same application. Only one design will be selected per artist.

The Town has selected five horse molds, consisting of two of each of the below horse breeds and stances.  Artists may list their preference(s) of horse sculpture but may not be guaranteed to be selected for their preference.  The design of the sculpture is full-sized representation of the following horses:

1)      American Quarter Horse: 5’10”H x 8’L

2)      Thoroughbred Grazing: 5’H x ’10”L x 20”D

3)      Thoroughbred Standing: 6’3”H x 7’7”L x 19”W

4)      Running Mustang: 50” at the withers

5)      Arabian Horse: 6’H x 8’L x 20”D

Click here to view each horse sculpture.

Each horse sculpture is constructed from fiberglass and will be shop primed flat white to be able to receive a multitude of finishes.

Selected artists will fabricate their designs onto the sculpture at a designated location at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds and must sign a Waiver and Release Form and execute the Town's Letter of Understanding.

PROJECT LOCATION

The ten completed painted fiberglass Horse sculptures will be placed throughout the Town at various parks and Town owned facilities.

In creating a design, consider carefully the South Florida weather and other elements of nature, including sun, rain, wind and dirt. The horses will be displayed in key outdoor locations accessible by the general public. As such, designs should be created with durability and public safety concerns in mind. Although objects may be attached to the horses, artists should be aware that vandalism can and unfortunately does occur. Any objects added to a horse must be attached in such a way that it cannot be easily removed. Treatments shall be flat or flush with no sharp edges.

The surface of each horse mold is primed by the manufacturer, so it is not necessary to reapply a primer. Acrylic paint, artificial resin paint or two-component paint can be used to paint the horse.

The artist must use a minimum of three coats of paint using a two-part, hard gloss clean non-yellowing UV coating. The artist is required to apply a sealant to the horse.

INSTALLATION AND REPAIR OF HORSE

Artists will not be required to install the horse to its location, the Town will manage this process. Artists should, however, be available for any possible touch-up work that may be required once the exhibit is underway.

PROHIBITED CONTENT STANDARDS

Artists should bear in mind that the audience will be broad-based and of all ages, and designs should be appropriate for public display. Designs that are religious, political or sexual in nature will not be accepted. The structure may not display messages with text or contain any words or alpha-numeric characters. Additionally, neither corporate logos nor advertising is allowed. Designs will be evaluated to ensure they conform to these standards. The Town of Davie may reject any design that, in its sole discretion, does not adhere to these standards.
