Crooked Tree Arts Center - Petoskey is accepting submissions for the juried photography exhibition Identity Maps: Environmental Portraiture. Selected artworks may relate to this theme broadly and in many ways.

Artists residing in the Great Lakes Region (Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and the Canadian province of Ontario), who are at least 18 years old, are invited to submit up to 3 original works to Identity Maps, an Exhibition of Environmental Portraiture, juried by Detroit Photographer, Amy Sacka. The exhibition will run from September 17 through November 2, 2024, in the Bonfield Gallery at the Crooked Tree Arts Center, in Petoskey, Michigan.

The poet Elizabeth Brewster wrote: “People are made of places”, and as we know, places are also transformed and inflected by people. The exhibition aims to gather works that explore dynamic relationships between individuals, communities, identities, and places. Submissions must be original works of art created with photographic media, produced within the past three years. Broad interpretation of the theme and experimental approaches are welcome.

Three cash prizes will be awarded: First Place award of $500, Second Place award of $300, and Third Place award of $200.

The juror, Amy Sacka, is a documentary photographer and writer based in Detroit, Michigan. Her work celebrates the culture and environment of Detroit and the Great Lakes at large. From her widely exhibited long-term project on diminishing Great Lakes ice to her award-winning, lyrical street projects on Detroit, Amy’s work unearths important insights into Midwestern identity and the meaning of home. Amy is a two-time National Geographic grantee and two-time Critical Mass Finalist, whose documentary work has been featured in publications from National Geographic to The Washington Post, the Guardian, Detroit Free Press and LensCulture, and exhibited everywhere from Les Recontres de Arles to Cortona on the Move, the Detroit Institute of Arts and beyond.
