PUBLIC ART SCULPTURE EXHIBITION: William King Museum of Art located in Abingdon, Virginia is excited to announce Unleashing the Wolf our first triennial outdoor sculpture exhibition. 6 custom works will be chosen by 2 selected jurors and be displayed on the museum campus for 5 years. Abingdon, Virginia (also known as "Wolf Hills") is not without its share of wolf folklore, hence the theme of our sculpture exhibition. All entries must fit the theme of Unleashing the Wolf. Each artwork will be placed on the museum grounds on a designated concrete pad measuring 8’x8’. 

 

All sculptures must be free-standing and resilient to variant temperatures and outdoor elements as it will be displayed outdoors for long-term public display.

 

FEES: Artists will pay a $30 non-refundable entry fee. 

 

TIMELINE: Entries must be submitted by January 1, 2025. All artists will be notified of their acceptance status by March 1, 2025. Accepted artists will then be provided with a $3000 stipend. Artists will have ONE YEAR to complete their themed sculptures. All sculptures must be completed by March 1, 2026 and will arrive at the museum by April 1, 2026 via Crozier Art Shipping. William King Museum of Art will be responsible for costs associated with shipping the work via Crozier Art Shipping.  All artworks will be debuted May 1st, 2nd and 3rd, 2026 at the William King Museum of Art for the Virginia 250 History Festival, simultaneously, William King Museum of Art will be unveiling its brand new, accessible sculpture garden. All 6 sculptures will be exhibited for 5 years on the museum grounds. Sculptures will be on loan for a period of 5 years, beginning on May 1, 2026 and ending on May 1, 2029 at the end of which time the sculptures will be returned to the artist via Crozier Art Shipping.  

 

AWARDS: Each of the 6 selected artists  will receive a $3000 stipend from William King Museum of Art in order to purchase materials to create the sculpture and execute the sculpture's design. All artworks will be juried by two academic professionals whose work and research pertains to sculpture. 

 

SUBMISSIONS: Please submit at least 1 and up to 5 sculptural designs pertaining to the theme of “Unleashing the Wolf.” Make sure that your images are at least 300 dpi. Please include an artist bio, artist statement, and resume/CV with your submission.

REQUIREMENTS:

Work Sample Requirements: 

  • Artists must submit 1 to 5 images for consideration. These do not have to be 5 different sculptural designs; this can be a single design showcasing the sculpture from multiple angles. 
  • The images submitted must be at least 300 dpi resolution

Application Requirements:

  • Artists must submit the following details with their work samples:
    • Resume/CV
    • Brief biography of no more than 500 words
    • An artist statement

All artists are encouraged to apply to this annual exhibition. Artists must meet the following basic criteria:

  • Artists must be 18 years of age or older
  • Artists must complete the application on CaFE
  • Only outdoor sculpture submissions will be accepted
