A Juried National Competition
Abstraction is a term often misunderstood. Think of René Magritte's "The Treachery of Images." The artist depicts a pipe in a realistic style, yet the title challenges us to understand that it is not a pipe, but a painted image of a pipe. In other words, it is an abstraction of a pipe.

Abstraction may be the image of an object that has been warped, twisted, or cubed to challenge our way of seeing the object, or it may be completely nonrepresentational. It can be expressive, like Jackson Pollock's works that trace the movement of the artist's body, or contemplative like Rothko's color field paintings.

A good abstract piece follows the same principles as a successful realistic piece, including space, time, temperature, rhythm, movement, and soul. Some believe abstraction carries virtues such as courage, justice, or spirituality, while others see it as a composition of formal elements like line, shape, and color.

Abstraction exists along a continuum, with some works leaning closer to representation and others being completely non-objective.

You are invited to submit work that fits within this broad spectrum of abstraction. The departure from representation can be minimal, partial, or total. Abstraction is an incredibly versatile genre that allows the artist freedom to create reality in very personal terms.
