Meet our Jurors, Jan Hoy and Harry von Stark
About Jan Hoy
Jan Hoy lives and works in Coupeville on Whidbey Island, WA. She was raised in the Puget Sound area and has spent her entire life there. Jan received her degree in Fine Arts from the University of Washington and has pursued a career in art to this date.
Jan’s work is always abstract and the initial small pieces are created in water based clay. Some of these pieces are fabricated or cast in bronze while others are scaled up and fabricated in bronze, Corten steel, or stainless steel. These large scale pieces have found homes in both private and public spaces. Her work is featured in the Sutter Hill Cathedral Hospital, San Francisco, CA, downtown Seattle, Lake Oswego, OR, La Conner, WA, and the new veterans home in Walla Walla, WA.
Recently the city of Bainbridge Island, WA purchased a large bronze piece for their permanent collection. Also, this past summer her work was chosen as a finalist to create a 15.5’ high roundabout sculpture in Bend, OR.
Jan’s sculptures are in the collections of the Museum of NW Art, La Conner, and BIMA, Bainbridge Is., WA. Her work is represented by the J. Rinehart Gallery, Seattle, WA.
About Harry von stark
Harry immigrated to the US from Germany at five years old after spending 18 months in school. Being a child growing up in a new country presented many challenges, particularly learning a new language. He grew up in a small Central California farming community which allowed him to roam free and try to understand street names, and names in general.
Learning came mostly by visual associations which intensified his visual perceptions rather than by word associations, hence his passion for photography. That experience became ingrained in his memory where he tends to see things as lines, shapes, and curves. Harry received a graphic design diploma from Platt Graphics College San Francisco. His graphic arts background gives him a unique perspective on photography. Harry now lives and works on Whidbey Island, WA.
