Riverviews Artspace is pleased to announce its 16th Annual Juried Art Show, inviting artists from across the nation to submit their work for consideration. Artists are encouraged to submit up to three artworks regardless of subject matter or medium, for evaluation by our esteemed juror, Betsy Bannan.

Betsy Bannan is a Roanoke-based painter, fine artist, and professor who explores different perspectives of the earth and its inhabitants through aerial views and imagery of flight. Her works range in size and encompass observations of topography, human impact on land, and the concept of built environment. Betsy has her MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and teaches painting in the School of Visual Arts at Virginia Tech, where she received her BA in Studio Art.She has paintings in the permanent collection of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC and in numerous private collections in the US and UK. She has exhibited work in VA, NYC, and was featured in Riverviews’ The Sky Is Not The Limit exhibition earlier this year. Below is an artist statement regarding her recent work:

"My latest works are based on seeing the earth from above-from a plane or satellite. The experience of my first transcontinental flight was a stunning visual experience that demonstrated in a graphic way the enormity and variety of the land mass our country is situated upon; it was at that moment my painting became inexorably tied to flying. I’m fascinated by visual sensations resulting from the interplay between man-made elements and the natural land surface, and how people carve out a living in the geography in which they exist."
